Amanda Howard ’08 suited up in a Red & Black uniform 230 times during her career. She started all 77 games for W&J field hockey from 2004-2007 and then was in the starting lineup for all 153 Presidents’ softball games from 2005-2008.
During the fall, Howard produced 27 goals (8th in school history) and 20 assists (4th in history) for 74 points (4th all-time). She helped usher in a successful era of W&J field hockey, leading the team to a 15-5 record during her senior year and a the first postseason game in program history (ECAC Tournament).
When Howard arrived at W&J, field hockey was just in its third varsity season after being reinstituted at the college after a 20-plus year hiatus. Howard and her teammates won eight matches during her freshman year of 2004, quadrupling the number of wins combined from the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
She was twice named All-Empire 8 Conference, including a first-team accolade following the 2007 season. She was also W&J’s 2006 Empire 8 Sportswoman Team representative.
On the softball diamond, Howard set the school record for career hits (181 – remains 2nd highest total in W&J history). She played more games (153) and stole more bases (60) than any softball player in program history. Howard also ranks second in the W&J record books for career runs (116) and seventh in career batting average (.351).
Howard was a mainstay in the lineup as leadoff hitter and center fielder. Similar to the field hockey turnaround, Howard helped the Presidents win the 2006 PAC softball championship, the program’s first conference title in a decade. In the three games of the PAC Tournament in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Howard produced five hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases as the Presidents swept three games to claim the title.
W&J also qualified for the ECAC Division III Softball postseason tournament in both 2007 and 2008.
She was a four-time All-PAC softball selection, including three first-team awards. Howard was twice chosen to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
