Chris Edwards ’06 passed for 8,303 yards and 87 touchdowns during his career as one of the top quarterbacks in W&J history.

Both of those numbers remain fourth in school history. In 2004, Edwards produced one of the top offensive seasons ever at W&J by throwing for 3,307 yards and 38 touchdowns, while leading the Presidents to the NCAA playoff quarterfinals. In the opening round, Edwards completed 32-of-46 passes for 418 yards and six touchdowns in a wild 55-48, double-overtime victory over Bridgewater. He followed that up with a 293-yard, two-touchdown performance in a 24-14 round two triumph over Christopher Newport.

During his senior season, Edwards guided W&J back to the NCAA playoffs after compiling 3,450 passing yards (2nd-best single-season total in W&J history) and 36 touchdowns. Between weeks two (Hanover) and three (Allegheny), Edwards completed an NCAA-record 29 consecutive passes. He also set the NCAA single-game record by completing his first 21 pass attempts against Allegheny. Both records still stand today.

The 2005 Hansen All-American also was one of the most accomplished student-athletes in school history. He was one of 16 finalists for the National Football Foundation Draddy Trophy (now Campbell Award) for the top football student-athlete among all NCAA divisions. Edwards was honored at the NFF & College Hall of Fame’s 48th Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Keeping his W&J connection, following graduation, Edwards completed research at fellow W&J alum, Dr. Gary Silverman’s lab at Magee Women’s Hospital. He attended the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa., along with W&J alum, Bethany Almquist ’07 and they married in 2008.

His research on the effects of weight loss on knee pain and osteoarthritis was published in both Arthritis and Journal of Arthritis. Edwards graduated in 2011 with the Outstanding Orthopaedic Student Award and was designated into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, graduating in the top of his class. He was selected for Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh training under world-renowned surgeon Freddie Fu, MD and also completed a fellowship specializing in foot and ankle surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Currently, Chris is a practicing physician with Tri Rivers Orthopaedics with offices located in the North Hills, Cranberry and Butler. He is affiliated with UPMC Passavant McCandless and Cranberry, Butler Memorial Hospital and the Western Pennsylvania Surgery Center and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Allegheny County Medical Society.

Still remaining part of the game, Chris has been a team physician for several local high school football teams including Mars, Knoch, Deer Lakes and Butler. Drs. Chris and Bethany reside in Gibsonia, Pa., and have two beautiful daughters, Lila (6) and Iris (1). In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending Mars sporting events, and fishing and kayaking at Canadohta Lake.
