Emily Hays ’09 is one of nine women’s basketball players in W&J history to be selected as the conference player of the year.

A three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection, Hays helped her teams reach the postseason during all four years of her career, including a pair of NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Her teams won 89 games and produced four-straight, 20-win seasons. During her senior year, Hays averaged 15.9 points and 6.3 rebounds and guided the Presidents to a 24-5 record. W&J earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the sixth national tournament appearance in school history.

Hays finished her career with 1,147 points (10.3 ppg), 537 rebounds (4.8 rpg), 80 steals, 70 assists, and 57 blocks. She made over 50 percent of her career field goal attempts (455-896) and played 111 career games which set a W&J record at the time of her graduation. Her 461 points scored during the 2008-09 season remains the ninth-best, single-season total in Presidents’ history.

The 2007-08 Presidents finished with a 23-7 record and claimed the ECAC South Region Championship. She was a valuable freshman reserve on the 2005-06 team which defeated Thomas More 61-58 in the PAC Championship Game. Hays grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the title game triumph.

Following graduation, Hays has gone on to a successful career as a college basketball coach, including her current position as assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. She has been a head coach for seven years at Hiram (3) and Dickinson (4), while also spending time as an assistant coach at Valparaiso.
