Michael Brooder '95 was a dominant defensive end in the early 1990s during the most successful stretch of championship football in Presidents’ history.

Brooder still owns the program’s single-season sack record after recording 17 during the 1994 season in which the Presidents advanced to their second Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.  During the ‘94 season Brooder was a co-defensive captain and helped lead the defense to one of its best years in school history.  The 1994 defense allowed only 0.6 yards per rush by opponents during the regular-season.  That defensive unit did not allow a regular-season rushing touchdown.  He still ranks third in W&J history with 58 career tackles for a loss and fifth in program history with 31 sacks.

Brooder’s senior season was recognized by two different organizations, Associated Press and Champion USA, who selected him to their All-America squads.  Brooder was one of 18 Division III players selected to the Associated Press team which honors football players from all Division II, Division III and NAIA.  He was also a two-time All-PAC pick, including a first-team honor as a senior.  A four-year letter winner, Brooder’s teams won four PAC championships, participated in four NCAA playoffs and produced a 41-7 record.  The 1992 and 1994 teams advanced to the national championship game, while the 1993 squad made it to the national semi-finals.   Brooder’s teams posted a 33-3 regular-season record and went a perfect 16-0 mark in PAC games.

Brooder also excelled in the classroom as he earned CoSIDA Academic All-District laurels as a senior.  Brooder helped his teams participate in the only two NCAA DIII football championship games in W&J history and produce a 41-7 overall record (.872) with four PAC championships as well as an ECAC team of the year honor in 1994.

After leaving W&J he returned to his home state of Connecticut where he began his career in public accounting.  Today Michael the managing partner for Marcum LLP’s Hartford office where he has been for the last 20 years.  Marcum LLP is a national accounting firm with over 1,500 employees and 200 partners across the US and China.  With his success in business he shares his knowledge as a volunteer for various local not-for-profit boards including the Wallingford Board of Education, SARAH Foundation, Inc., Connecticut Technology Council, Gaylord Hospital, and the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts to name a few.  In addition he serves as the chairperson of the Marcum Foundation for the New England region of Marcum.
