Nick Carr ’16 became first wrestling national champion in W&J history after winning the 157-pound NCAA Division III championship in 2015. Carr defeated Wabash’s Reece Lefever 6-2 in the finals at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. The national title capped a perfect 27-0 season for Carr, who became the first wrestler from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference since 1983 to win a national championship.
At the 2015 national tournament, Carr opened with a 12-6 victory over Luther’s Reed van Anrooy. He then earned a 13-5 major decision against St. Olaf’s Carl Elmer, before besting Loras’ Steven DeWitt 10-3 in the semifinals. In the finals versus Lefever, Carr notched a pair of first-period takedowns and a 4-1 lead. He added an escape and an additional point for riding time advantage to earn the title. Carr started the season as the preseason No. 1 ranked wrestler and held that status the entire season.
He posted a 41-1 career record at W&J with his only loss occurring in the 2014 national championship match of the 165-pound bracket. The 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-American won two PAC titles during his two seasons with the Presidents after starting his career at Division I Kent State. He boasted a 21-10 record during his redshirt season at Kent State after claiming three WPIAL titles and a PIAA championship at South Fayette High School.
