Paige Fairbaugh ’84 is the recipient of the 2023 Robert M. Murphy Award.
W&J began playing varsity field hockey in 1975 and Fairbaugh joined the team for the 1980 season. While the team dropped a number of close games, Fairbaugh quickly established herself as a scoring force and was selected as a Pennwood Conference All-Star.
The 1981 Presidents dropped three-straight 2-0 games to start the season, but momentum shifted at the midway point and W&J set a school record with five victories. W&J finished as the Pennwood Conference runner-up for the first time and Fairbaugh was once again selected to the conference all-star team.
Fairbaugh established the single-game record with six goals and helped W&J set a team record with Presidents' 11 goals in the 1982 opener versus Chatham. She closed her final two years with Pennwood All-Conference honors and remains one of only six players in W&J field hockey history to be honored as a four-time all-conference performer.
Throughout her adult life, Fairbaugh has been actively involved in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has formed Team Fairbaugh and has participated in 18 MS Challenge Walks which has raised over $250,000 for the National MS Society. The walks raise funds for research and programs for those afflicted with multiple sclerosis.
In 2012, Fairbaugh was inducted into the Maryland Chapter of the MS Fundraising Hall of Fame. Team Fairbaugh’s motto is “You’ll never walk alone”.
