Head Coach
Mike Orstein, who is in his 26th season as the leader of the Presidents' swimming & diving programs and 1977 graduate
Angelo Morascyzk will be part of the 2014 class.Â
Orstein has coached collegiately for 30 overall years (four years at York, Pa., before coming to W&J) and will enter the 2014-15 season just nine victories shy of 500 (491-202-3, .708). In 26 years at Washington & Jefferson, his men's and women's teams have produced a 431-177-2 record. The 15-time Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year has coached nine W&J teams to league championship and 243 individuals have claimed PAC titles. He coached his daughter, Kaitlyn Orstein '08, to eight NCAA Division III titles and 17 different Presidents have earned All-America distinction under his guidance.Â
Perhaps his most prized possession is being honored with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Distinguished Service Award for outstanding leadership on January 17, 2005, by Washington & Jefferson College.
Orstein is also responsible for the emergence of water polo as a varsity sport at W&J when he secured a $60,000 grant from the United States Olympic Committee in April 1999. During his four seasons as head water polo coach, both men's and women's teams were ranked nationally in the Top 10 every year. The women's team traveled to the Collegiate III National Championships, where they finished 7th in 2000 and 6th in 2001
Morascyzk is also a member of the Washington & Jefferson College Athletic Hall of Fame as a wrestler and coach. For nearly four decades, Morascyzk's name was synonymous with Presidents' wrestling. He began his W&J career in 1973 and he started every match for the Presidents during his four-year career. Morascyzk wrestled three years in the 134-pound weight class and spent his junior year at 126 pounds. He was a four-time national qualifier and his 62-14 career record remains as the fifth-best winning percentage in school history (.813). As a freshman, Morascyzk earned the wrestling program's first-ever team point at the 1974 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Morascyzk, who graduated with honors with degrees in secondary education and political science, returned to his alma mater as a co-head coach with James White from 1993 to 1998 and helped the 1995 Presidents win the school's first PAC title in 29 years. He took over the head coaching role on his own in 1998 until the 2005-06 season.
During his coaching career, W&J wrestlers captured 44 conference individual titles, including nine who were selected as the Presidents' Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Wrestler. He also coached five Academic All-Americans and guided the 2001-02 Presidents to the first undefeated dual-meet record (7-0) in school history. The Presidents also claimed the 1999 PAC Championship under his direction.
Morascyzk was a standout scholastic wrestler at Immaculate Conception High School in Washington.Â
