ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Competing in their first action of the 2016-17 season, the Presidents finished two strokes off the lead to place third at the Malone Invitational, hosted at Tannenhauf Golf Course.
The Washington & Jefferson men's golf team carded a 36-hole score of 589 (291-298) to finish behind a pair of NCAA Division II schools, team champion and host Malone (294-293-587) and Ashland (289-299-588).
W&J was led by
Niklas Steiner (Boonsboro, Md./St. Maria Goretti) who shot identical rounds of 73-73 to place seventh with his 36-hole total of a two-over par 146.
Patrick Jonnet (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and
Jake Darr (Middletown, Md./Middletown) tied for 11th place in the 51-golfer field with scores of three-over 147. Jonnet improved his day two score from a 74 to 73, while Darr carded the best round of the tournament in round one, his first collegiate competitive round, with a four-under par 68. He followed that up with a 79 on the second day.
With a seven-over 151,
Bryce Egger (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) placed 21st after shaving a stroke off his score in day two, going from a 76 to a 75.
Casey O'Korn (Canonsburg, Pa./The Linsly School (W.Va.)) rounded out the W&J lineup with a 10-over 154 thanks to identical rounds of 77.
The Presidents will be right back in action Sunday-Monday, Sept. 11-12 when they compete at the Guy W. Kuhn Memorial hosted by Allegheny at the Country Club of Meadville.
