Jina DeRubbo (Concord '94) enters her 22nd season on the Washington & Jefferson College bench as head women's basketball coach in 2025-26. DeRubbo also serves as the college's Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) and the Title IX Coordinator. She has also served as Assistant Athletic Director since July 2015.
DeRubbo has been named PAC Coach of the Year a total of 11 times during her coaching career. She earned the award for the fourth consecutive time following the 2024-25 season.
DeRubbo, who spent seven seasons leading fellow PAC member Bethany before coming to W&J, has compiled an overall record of 550-210 during her 28-year career. W&J has won 73 percent of its games (419-153) since DeRubbo took over as head coach. She currently ranks 16th among active head coaches in Division III in wins. DeRubbo has compiled winning seasons in 26 of her 28 years as a collegiate head coach.
DeRubbo has been to the postseason 13 times at W&J: five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2022, 2025) and seven ECAC Tournament showings (2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019). The 2008 team won the ECAC Division III Southern Tournament Championship.
In 28 years as a collegiate head coach (21 seasons at W&J; 7 at Bethany), DeRubbo's squads have competed in the postseason 19 times (10 - NCAA, 9 - ECAC). She has also led teams to eight Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships (5 - Bethany, 3 - W&J. DeRubbo has guided 19 different teams to 20-win seasons, including 16 teams at W&J.
During the 2024-25 season, the Presidents claimed their seventh PAC Championship with a 59-50 win over Chatham in the finals. W&J finished the campaign with a 24-5 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance. W&J went on to secure its first-ever NCAA Tournament win when they beat Messiah in overtime in an NCAA First Round game. The 24 wins tied for the most in a single season in program history. The Presidents finished the regular season as the top team in the PAC for a fourth-straight season. DeRubbo had a pair of players earn First Team All-PAC laurels, as Meghan Dryburgh and Stellanie Loutsion were among the conference's best. Dryburgh surpassed the 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound marks for her career, in the process became the second player in program history to do so.
DeRubbo guided the Presidents to a 23-3 overall record during the 2023-24 season. W&J once again clinched the top seed in the PAC Tournament after posting a 19-1 record in the regular season. Meghan Dryburgh won PAC Player of the Year and gained All-PAC First Team honors for the second-straight year. Jaden Wan was also voted as PAC Newcomer of the Year at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.
She helped the Presidents finish with a 24-3 overall record during the 2022-23 season. The 24 wins tied for the most in a single season in program history. Meghan Dryburgh captured PAC Player of the Year honors and was named an All-America by the WBCA. The Presidents earned perhaps its most impressive victory of 22-23 in the season opener at Marietta, who eventually advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. DeRubbo earned career win No. 500 with a road victory at Waynesburg on Feb. 11.
DeRubbo led the Presidents to the 2021-22 PAC Tournament title, its first in 16 seasons. DeRubbo's squad posted another 20-win season and finished the regular season 17-1 in PAC play to capture the top seed in the conference tourney. DeRubbo was named PAC Coach of the Year for an eighth time in her career. Earning individual honors was junior forward Victoria Koeck, who was voted PAC Defensive Player of the Year.
The Presidents recorded an 8-1 overall record during an abbreviated 2020-21 season. W&J reached the PAC Tournament Championship game for a fourth consecutive season and the seventh time since 2013. W&J upended reigning PAC Tournament champion Grove City by a 62-40 score in the PAC Semifinals. Alie Seto was voted PAC Player of the Year and D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region First Team. Additionally, Seto and Maria Lawhorne were named First Team All-PAC while Lauren Gilbert was Second Team and Hannah Johnston was Honorable Mention.
W&J finished 2019-20 with an 18-10 overall record. The Presidents reached the PAC Tournament Championship game for a third consecutive season and sixth time since 2013. W&J dominated top-seeded Saint Vincent in the PAC Semifinals to stun the defending league champions for a 74-53 victory. DeRubbo led the Presidents to non-league wins over NCAA qualifier La Roche, as well as Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon from the UAA. DeRubbo coached Alie Seto and Lauren Gilbert to All-PAC honors.
W&J compiled a 20-9 overall record during the 2018-19 season. The Presidents advanced to the PAC Championship game and qualified for the ECAC Tournament advancing into the quarterfinal round after a win over Penn State Altoona. That marked the 12th time in 15 seasons at W&J that DeRubbo reached the 20-win mark. Three players received All-PAC honors for the 2018-19 season. Danielle Parker was voted onto the First Team while Alie Seto (Second Team) and Lauren Gilbert (Honorable Mention) also gained recognition.
The Presidents put together a 22-6 overall record in the 2017-18 season, as DeRubbo earned her seventh Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award in addition to her first ECAC Division III Coach of the Year selection. The 22 wins for DeRubbo during the 2017-18 season are tied for the sixth most wins in a season in school history and were the most in a single season since the 2015-16 team tied the program record with 24 wins.
Three players earned All-PAC recognition under DeRubbo's direction for the 2017-18 season, including Amirah Moore to the First Team, and the program's second Freshman of the Year, Lauren Gilbert (Leigh Sulkowski, 2002-03). She reached yet another milestone on Jan. 6, 2018 when the Presidents defeated Chatham, 86-53, to give DeRubbo her 400th win as a collegiate head coach. DeRubbo became the first basketball coach -- men's or women's -- in PAC history to reach 400 coaching wins entirely as a PAC and NCAA Division III member.
For the 2016-17 season, DeRubbo guided the Presidents to a 16-10 overall record, including an 8-6 mark in the PAC, as three players earned All-PAC recognition (Danielle Parker and Amirah Moore, Second Team; Taylor Cortazzo, Honorable Mention).
DeRubbo led the Presidents to the 2016 PAC championship game and ECAC South championship game after the program’s fourth straight 20-win season. As a result, DeRubbo won her sixth PAC Coach of the Year award and coached Beka Bellhy to d3hoops.com all-region and ECAC all-star honors.
Following the 2014-15 season, Valerie Dunlap '15 became the first Capital One Academic All-American in women's basketball history at W&J. Dunlap was also a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Beka Bellhy '16 earned First Team All-PAC honors and reached the 1,000-point plateau during her junior season in 14-15.
On Feb. 6, 2013, she won her 300th game as a collegiate head coach (16 overall seasons) after the Presidents defeated Grove City 69-50. She later won her 200th game at W&J on Dec. 3, 2014, a 49-42 victory also against Grove City.
The 2009-10 Presidents established the school record for victories (24-5) and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Presidents' 2009 senior class, recruited by DeRubbo, graduated with the most victories in school history with 89.
In 2008, W&J won the ECAC Division III Southern Tournament Championship for just the second time in school history. W&J opened the ECAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated Moravian, 86-76, at home in the opening round. The Presidents knocked off top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy, 64-56, in the semifinals and then completed the championship run with a 78-70 victory over Lebanon Valley in the title game. That same year (on December 8, 2007), DeRubbo won her 200th career game after W&J defeated Grove City by a 76-60 margin.
During the 2006-2007 season, DeRubbo guided a young Presidents' squad to a 20-9 overall record. W&J received a postseason home game in the ECAC Tournament and advanced to the ECAC Semifinals.
The 2005-2006 Presidents swept the Presidents' Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the tournament title. DeRubbo was honored as the PAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in her career. DeRubbo helped Leigh (Sulkowski) Slowey (2002-06) develop into one of the nation's best players. Sulkowski was the PAC Player of the Year and a consensus All-American both of her years under DeRubbo. DeRubbo has coached six All-Americans throughout her career and eight PAC Players of the Year.
DeRubbo came to W&J from Bethany College (W.Va.) where she turned the Bison program into a perennial national contender. Bethany made four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in five seasons and also qualified for the ECAC South Region Tournament in 1999.
In her seven seasons with the Bison, DeRubbo became the all-time leader in victories at the College with an overall record of 131-57. Bethany claimed five Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships and DeRubbo earned PAC Coach of the Year honors four times. At Bethany, DeRubbo helped to develop four players who earned All-America and All-Region laurels. In addition, five of her players went on to be named the PAC Player of the Year.
Prior to her experience at Bethany, DeRubbo served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Marietta College for two seasons. Her responsibilities included scouting and player development as well as overseeing the strength and conditioning program.
DeRubbo was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Division II Concord College, from 1992-1994. DeRubbo finished her playing career at Concord College as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,050 points. She was also a four-time All-WVIAC selection and second in the school record books for career assists. In 2002, DeRubbo was inducted into the Concord College Hall of Fame.
During her career, DeRubbo has been a member of the NCAA Division III Regional Ranking and the WBCA Conference Captains' committees. She is also a voter on the D3hoops.com weekly top 25 poll.
DeRubbo and her husband, Jeff, are the proud parents of one daughter, Riley, and two sons, Dante and Dominick. Riley is a student-athlete who previously competed for three seasons at Division I American University before joining the Presidents during the 2024-25 season. Dante is a sophomore football player at W&J. Dominick is a sophomore men's lacrosse student-athlete at York College of Pa.
