WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson held Grove City to 35 percent shooting (19-of-55) and collected a 61-54 PAC men's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center.Â
The Presidents (8-7, 3-3 PAC) held the Wolverines (6-8, 3-3 PAC) without a field goal for an 11-minute stretch during the first half to take control of the game. W&J trailed 8-7 six minutes in, but outscored GCC 19-7 over the next 12 minutes to grab a 26-15 lead with two minutes left. Junior guard Jake Swan (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg C.C.) punctuated the spurt with a three-pointer.Â
Grove City was held to three field goals for the first 16 minutes and 45 seconds, but ended the half with a flurry, including five points from J.C. Schwartz in the final minute to trail 26-23 at halftime.Â
The Wolverines continued the momentum with the first basket of the second half, but W&J quickly regained control with a 16-5 run which was capped by junior point guard Doug Johnson's (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) second three-pointer of the second half.Â
A Schwartz lay-up brought the GCC deficit back to 56-51 with 55 seconds left, but Swan's free throws iced the win.
Junior forward Nate Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) led all scorers with 14 points, while also grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. Johnson contributed 10 points and four steals, while sophomore guard Tyler Haas (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) posted nine points, six rebounds and five assists. W&J shot 38 percent (20-of-53) and out-rebounded Grove City 42-35.Â
The Presidents look to continue to remain in the win column Saturday when hosting second-place Bethany at 4:00 pm.
