BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Junior guard Doug Johnson and sophomore guard Tyler Haas combined for 44 points and eight three-pointers to lead Washington & Jefferson's 80-68 PAC men's basketball win at Geneva Wednesday night at Metheny Fieldhouse.Â
Both players set career highs with their first collegiate 20-point games. Johnson (20 points) also set a career-high six three-pointers (6-of-8), the most by a President since classmate Nate Bellhy canned seven at Thomas More on Dec. 8, 2012. As a team, W&J hit 8-of-13 from three-point range versus the Golden Tornadoes.
Haas bucketed 24 points (8-of-11 field goals), while adding seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.Â
W&J (9-8, 4-4 PAC) fired out to a 13-4 lead, but the hosts scored 13 of the next 16 points to grab a 17-16 advantage at the 8:49 mark. W&J quickly regrouped with a 9-0 spurt and led by as many as 14 before settling for a 36-27 halftime lead.Â
Jordan Harbison's three-pointer three minutes into the second half but the GC gap to 41-40. W&J methodically built its lead back up to double digits and Johnson's final triple with 4:09 remaining helped seal the win.Â
Junior swingman Mike Resnik added 14 points and six boards, while senior guard Brett Rubin-Goldstein notched 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. W&J shot 49 percent (26-of-53).Â
Harbison led the Golden Tornadoes with 21 points after making 5-of-17 three-point attempts.Â
The Presidents will host Westminster on Saturday at 3:00 pm as a part of the celebration of 100 years of basketball at W&J. At halftime, all former Presidents who have returned to campus will be recognized on the Henry Memorial Center court, including special recognition for the 1993-94 NCAA Elite Eight team and the 2009-10 ECAC South champions.
