WASHINGTON, Pa. – The only two Presidents' Athletic Conference schools with both men's and women's teams with winning overall records will meet on Wednesday at the Henry Memorial Center as Washington & Jefferson hosts Saint Vincent. The men's game will tip off first at 6:00 pm followed by the women's contest.
The W&J men (10-8, 5-4 PAC) have won four of their past five games, but the Bearcats (15-2, 8-0 PAC) have been scorching hot as winners of 11 in a row. Saint Vincent last was on the losing end of a final score on Nov. 30 when Juniata edged the Bearcats 77-71.
During Saint Vincent's win streak, nine of the final margins have been by double digits, including a 96-66 victory over W&J on Dec. 16. Isaac Turner (9-of-18 field goals) led SVC with 30 points and helped the Bearcats shoot 58 percent overall (28-of-48).Â
Mitch Locher and
Nate Bellhy paced the Presidents with 14-point efforts.
The main difference in the first meeting came from the three-point line as Saint Vincent canned 11-of-19 shots, while the Presidents were held to just one made triple on nine attempts. The Bearcats are shooting 40 percent as a team from long distance and have three players with at least 25 makes this winter. The left-handed Turner leads the team with 33 triples and a PAC-high 21.6 points per game. Dillon Stith has turned into the league's top post player with 18.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Both numbers rank second in the conference.
W&J has defended the three-point line better than any PAC team this year, holding opponents to under 33 percent. The Presidents have also attempted the second-most free throws in the league (437) and rank 19th in NCAA Division III in made foul shots (329).
Bellhy and Stith are tied for 17th nationally with nine double-doubles. Bellhy averages 17.9 points and 9.2 rebounds for the Presidents (14.2), who rank third behind Thomas More (15.2) and Saint Vincent (14.6) in assists per game.
Doug Johnson has made at least two three-pointers in five-straight games and 13 overall this year. He ranks sixth in the league at 41.9 percent (36-of-86) from downtown.
Washington & Jefferson leads the all-time series with Saint Vincent by a 27-26 margin. The Bearcats have dominated recently; however, with seven consecutive wins, including three last season. The Presidents' last victory in the series came on Jan. 3, 2011, a 71-69 triumph at the Henry Memorial Center.
The W&J women will be looking to narrow the gap between them and Saint Vincent in the league standings. The Bearcats (12-5, 9-1 PAC) own a two-game edge on the Presidents (12-5, 7-3 PAC) for the No. 2 spot in the conference. A win over W&J Wednesday would give SVC a three-game advantage and the tiebreaker for conference tournament seeding.
In the first meeting between the two programs, W&J trailed by 22 points at halftime, but nearly came all the way back before falling short late. The Presidents narrowed the deficit to 49-44 with 11 minutes left after
Alexa DelGreco's three-pointer, but W&J was held to only one made field goal in the final seven minutes. Saint Vincent received 20 points from Elle Collins and earned a 75-55 decision.
The Bearcats and Presidents are meeting for the 20th time in history with W&J leading by an 11-8 count. W&J took 2-of-3 games last year, including a 76-70 victory in the PAC Tournament semifinals. SVC has won two of the last three meetings in Washington.
Washington & Jefferson has two players moving their way up the charts in the school record book. 6-foot-3 center
Valerie Dunlap is second in W&J history with 125 career blocked shots, nine shy of becoming the program's all-time leader. Point guard
Kara Seamon has dished out 275 career assists and is 13 away from moving into sixth place on the all-time list. Seamon is also four points shy of 500 for her career and will suit up in the red and black uniform for the 100th time on Wednesday night.
DelGreco has continued her hot shooting of late with a streak of seven-straight games with at least one three-pointer. She is shooting 39 percent overall (31-80) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (16-32) since the start of the new year.Â
Saint Vincent relies on a balanced scoring attack with eight players averaging at least 5.0 points per game. Taylor Mathers leads the team at 14.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Collins leads the team with 24.8 minutes played per game and contributes 13.0 points. nearly 36 percent of SVC's shot attempts have come from three-point range, but the Bearcats are only making 29 percent of those shots (5th in PAC).
W&J continues its home stand Saturday when hosting the Thiel Tomcats at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. The men will once again play the opener on Saturday.
