WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The second half of Washington & Jefferson's four-game basketball home stand begins Saturday when the Presidents play host to the Thiel Tomcats at the Henry Memorial Center. The men's game once again tips things off at 1:00 pm, while the women follow 20 minutes after.Â
The W&J men (10-9, 5-5 PAC) nearly snapped conference leader Saint Vincent's 17-game PAC regular-season win streak on Wednesday, but a late 13-3 run by the Bearcats in the final 90 seconds pulled out the win for the visitors. W&J shot 54 percent overall, including 61 percent in the second half, but could not overcome the late three-point shooting by the Bearcats and a 38-22 deficit on the glass.Â
Four Presidents scored in double figures, led by
Mike Resnik's 19 (7-8 field goals). Resnik has scored in double figures four times in the last six games, including a pair of 19-point outings. He shoots 51 percent overall, placing him eighth in the PAC.Â
Washington & Jefferson has dominated the all-time series with Thiel, winning 83 of the previous 122 meetings. The Tomcats have won seven of the last 11 games in the series and four in a row at the Henry Memorial Center. W&J is looking for its first regular-season sweep of Thiel since the 2007-08 season.Â
On Dec. 7 in Greenville, W&J forced 23 Tomcat turnovers and earned a 64-60 triumph. The Presidents, who can give Head Coach
Glenn Gutierrez his 100th career win Saturday, overcame a five-point halftime deficit and received 16 points and eight rebounds from
Nate Bellhy. Luke Kochka paced the Tomcats with 18 points.Â
Thiel (7-9, 4-6 PAC) is hoping to pull even with W&J in the conference standings. Four teams (W&J and Grove City: 5-5; Thiel and Waynesburg: 4-6) are vying for the No. 4 spot in the league standings which results in the final home game for the opening round of the PAC Tournament.Â
The Tomcats lost five-straight games during the first two weeks of the new year, but have regrouped with a three-game win streak. Khari Bess leads the team in scoring (13.4) and assists (4.9 apg). Thiel owns the league's best defense as its holds opponents to 40 percent shooting on average.Â
The W&J women (12-6, 7-4 PAC) are hoping to rebound from Wednesday night's 92-82 home loss to the league's second place team, Saint Vincent. The Presidents are currently tied for fourth place in the PAC with Westminster, one game back of this coming Wednesday night's opponent, Waynesburg.Â
Chelsea Apke (20 points, 15 rebounds) and
Valerie Dunlap (19 points, 12 rebounds) both posted double-doubles against the Bearcats, but the Presidents never recovered from a 19-point halftime deficit. Dunlap also blocked the 126th shot of her career and is now only eight from setting the new school all-time record.Â
Kara Seamon dished out eight assists in the loss to Saint Vincent during her 100th appearance in a W&J uniform to increase her career total to 279. With five helpers against the Tomcats, Seamon will move into sixth place all-time at W&J.
The Presidents and Tomcats (4-14, 3-8 PAC) are meeting for the 67th time in history with W&J owning a 47-19 edge. Washington & Jefferson has won four-straight games in the series and has not lost to Thiel at the Henry Memorial Center since Jan. 9, 2008.Â
Earlier this year, W&J crushed Thiel 73-33 in Greenville. The Tomcats were held to 31 percent shooting (14-45), including 1-of-12 accuracy from three-point range. Nine different Presidents scored and
Beka Bellhy led the way with 22 points.Â
Thiel's only victory since Jan. 8 occurred last Saturday when the Tomcats defeated Geneva 59-47. Jaclyn Watkins had 16 points and has led Thiel in scoring seven of the last eight games. She averages 14.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Thiel ranks last in the PAC in scoring (55.4 ppg) and averages 22.3 turnovers per contest.Â
