WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania -- Louise Steele-Norton scored a goal in each half and Utica won the battle between two of the Empire 8 Conference's unbeaten field hockey teams after a 5-2 triumph at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. Â
The Pioneers (13-1, 7-0 E8) took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Â Hannah Mackey's shot midway through the first half deflected past W&J goalie
Morgan Brozena after hitting a W&J defender. Â Steele-Norton stuffed in her own rebound five minutes later for a 2-0 advantage.
W&J (9-6, 5-1 E8) got back into the match just over 12 minutes into the second half when
Amanda Steffey snuck behind the defense and scored her 10th goal of the season. Â The Presidents had a couple of chances to tie the game on penalty corners shortly after Steffey's goal; however, Utica netted three goals in a span of 3:36 to put the match out of reach. Â Steele-Norton had the first tally at the 52:30 mark. Â
Caroline Kallos wrapped up the scoring with 2:39 remaining after collecting a Steffey rebounded shot and firing home a goal. Â
Brozena made 10 saves for W&J, while Kells Casey stopped five shots for the Pioneers. Â Â Utica outshot W&J 18-10, including a 12-1 edge in the opening half. Â
