Utica tops W&J in Empire 8 showdown

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania -- Louise Steele-Norton scored a goal in each half and Utica won the battle between two of the Empire 8 Conference's unbeaten field hockey teams after a 5-2 triumph at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday.

The Pioneers (13-1, 7-0 E8) took a 2-0 lead into halftime.  Hannah Mackey's shot midway through the first half deflected past W&J goalie Morgan Brozena after hitting a W&J defender.  Steele-Norton stuffed in her own rebound five minutes later for a 2-0 advantage.

W&J (9-6, 5-1 E8) got back into the match just over 12 minutes into the second half when Amanda Steffey snuck behind the defense and scored her 10th goal of the season.  The Presidents had a couple of chances to tie the game on penalty corners shortly after Steffey's goal; however, Utica netted three goals in a span of 3:36 to put the match out of reach.  Steele-Norton had the first tally at the 52:30 mark.

Caroline Kallos wrapped up the scoring with 2:39 remaining after collecting a Steffey rebounded shot and firing home a goal.

Brozena made 10 saves for W&J, while Kells Casey stopped five shots for the Pioneers.   Utica outshot W&J 18-10, including a 12-1 edge in the opening half.
