Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

W&J opens with 58-56 win over Kenyon in Erie

ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team overcame a two-point halftime deficit to record a 58-56 win over Kenyon at the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament.

The Presidents begin the year 1-0 for the second time in the last three years. W&J advances to the Sunday's championship game against the Rochester Institute of Technology, a 69-44 winner over host Penn State Behrend on Saturday. Tip-off in the title game is set for 3:00 p.m.

W&J trailed by six, 48-42, after a Kenyon three-pointer with 10:07 to play, but used an 8-0 run over four-plus minutes to take a two-point lead. Beka Bellhy, Katey Wilson and Taylor Cortazzo made layups for the Presidents to tie the game, with Cortazzo converting the three-point play to give W&J a 49-48 lead with 6:22 to play.

The Ladies tied the game with a layup at the 4:26 mark, which held until a pair of Bellhy free throws with 2:29 left. Kenyon answered on the ensuing trip down the court with a three-pointer at the 2:13 mark to take a 53-52 lead.

Danni Medovich missed a jumper with 1:04 to play, but Cortazzo got the rebound and knocked down a triple to put W&J ahead by two, 55-53.

Valerie Dunlap recorded a block on the next trip down the court and then Medovich rebounded a missed Kenyon three-pointer and calmly hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left, 57-53.

Kenyon wasn't done, however, as it scored on a step-back three-pointer with 11 seconds left to make it a one-point game, 57-56. Following a time out, Medovich hit the first of two free throws and Kenyon rebounded the missed second and attempted to drive the length of the court, but Dunlap registered her second block in 36 seconds, corralling the defensive rebound this time to seal the win.

Kenyon's biggest lead was nine points at the 13:21 mark of the second half after the Ladies held a 35-33 lead at intermission. The first half was close the whole way, with the largest lead by either team being four points.

Bellhy led all players with 23 points, her ninth career game over 20 points, including 10-of-15 at the free-throw line. She also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds (three offensive) and added two assists and two steals.

Cortazzo and Medovich each finished in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively. Dunlap finished with seven boards and two blocks, both in the final minute of the game.
