WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Led by four players in double figures, the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team earned a 77-55 Presidents' Athletic Conference win over Thiel at Henry Memorial Center.
The win improves W&J to 6-1 on the season with an unblemished 3-0 mark in PAC games. Thiel slips to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The Tomcats possessed a 17-16 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first half, but W&J used a 15-4 run over the next eight minutes to 10 point lead, 31-21, with 2:14 to play.
Beka Bellhy jump started the lead when she gave the hosts the lead for good at the 10:12 mark. On the next W&J possession,
Jaime Tedesco knocked down a three-pointer and W&J made six-straight free throws (two each by Bellhy,
Alexa DelGreco and
Amirah Moore) before
Valerie Dunlap scored the final four points of the run on jump shots, 31-21.
A triple by the Tomcats slowed the run, but was quickly Moore followed with two more free throws and then
Laura Primyon sank a triple with 31 seconds to go in the half to make it a 12-point lead. A pair of Bellhy free throws with six seconds on the clock ended the scoring for the first half and sent W&J into the locker room with a 38-24 lead.
Thiel cut the deficit within 12 points, 54-42, midway through the second half, but W&J was able to extend the lead back out and hold on for the victory.
Behind a 15-of-31 (48.4 percent) second half, the Presidents shot 26-of-63 (41.3 percent) from the floor for the game and forced the Tomcats to make 25 turnovers, compared to just 11 for W&J.
Bellhy led all players with 16 points and added six boards, three steals and two assists. DelGreco was second on the team with 12 points, with Dunlap adding 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Moore scored a season-best 10 points with seven rebounds.
W&J closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule before the new year with a trio of games, the first of which is Friday, Dec. 19 against Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m. in Henry Memorial Gymnasium.
