GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team dropped its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at Grove City, 66-61.
The Presidents held a 34-32 lead at halftime thanks to 13 points from
Doug Johnson, who knocked down all three of his triple attempts in the first 20 minutes.
The first 43 seconds of the second half saw Grove City (4-2, 1-0) tie the game twice with a
Tyler Haas layup sandwiched in between. A pair of Wolverines free throws at the 17:58 mark gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
W&J (0-7, 0-1) tied the game with 5:02 to play on a pair of free throws by
Mike Resnik, but Grove City grabbed the lead back for good on the ensuing trip down the court.
Behind 13 points in the second half, Haas led all players with 20 points thanks to a 4-of-7 showing from three-point range. Johnson finished with 15 points before fouling out and Resnik added 12 points, seven boards and four steals.
Both teams shot an identical 22-of-56 from the floor, with the hosts knocking down one more triple (nine vs eight) and making 13-of-20 free throws to W&J's 9-of-14.
The Presidents are idle until Sunday, Dec. 14 with a 1 p.m. PAC contest against Thiel at Henry Memorial Center.
