Johnson's Heroics Lift W&J To Double OT Win

Box Score GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Doug Johnson set career highs with 28 points and seven three-pointers to help Washington & Jefferson sweep the PAC men's basketball season series from Grove City for the first time since the 1993-94 season following a 74-68 double-overtime win Wednesday night at the Grove City College Arena.

Johnson became the third President since 2000 to make seven three-pointers in a game, joining W&J all-time leading scorer Jon Koch '07 (at Westminster Jan. 2004) and current teammate Nate Bellhy (at Thomas More Dec. 2012).  Johnson made 7-of-16 shots from beyond the arc (9-of-19 overall) and grabbed seven rebounds.

Johnson's three-pointer with six seconds left forced overtime.  The Presidents trailed 53-48 with 10 seconds left, but Tyler Haas narrowed the deficit to three with a jumper.  Haas was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw.  Brett Rubin-Goldstein grabbed the offensive rebound and fired to Johnson for the game-tying shot.  Grove City's last ditch shot missed and the teams headed to overtime.

Bellhy scored the first basket of the first overtime, but W&J went scoreless for three minutes and fell behind 58-55.  Johnson stepped up again and drilled a three-pointer at the 1:03 mark and was fouled.  He sank the free throw for a 59-58 advantage.  After a GCC miss, Johnson made 1-of-2 foul shots, but Mitch Marmelstein's pair of free throws with 10 seconds remained forced a second overtime.  W&J missed a shot in the closing seconds and after the rebound, Grove City was unable to get off a shot attempt.

Johnson buried another triple seven seconds into the final overtime and W&J held Grove City off the scoreboard until JT Schwartz's trifecta narrowed the Wolverines' gap to 65-63 with 2:15 left.

Nick Martin followed with a jumper for W&J and his free throw with 31 ticks remaining made it a 75-70 W&J lead.  Marmelstein dropped in a triple 11 seconds later, but Rubin-Goldstein and Bellhy closed out the win with free throws in the final 14 seconds.

Bellhy added 17 points and 11 rebounds in 46 minutes of action.  Johnson logged 47 of a possible 50 minutes, while Rubin-Goldstein contributed nine points and five assists.  W&J made 10-of-31 three-point attempts and shot 37 percent overall (22-59).

Fifteen of Grove City's 23 field goals were three-pointers.  The Wolverines shot 43 percent (15-35) from three-point range, but only made 8-of-29 shots from inside the arc.

W&J has now won three-straight games at the Grove City College Arena.  The Presidents are back in action next Wednesday when hosting Geneva on Senior Night (8:00 pm).
