Rubin-Goldstein Celebrates Senior Night In Style With Game Winner From Halfcourt

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Brett Rubin-Goldstein drained a halfcourt shot at the final buzzer {click image for video} to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 62-61 Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Geneva Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center.

Geneva made a free throw with 2.5 seconds left to take a 61-59 lead.  After a timeout, Rubin-Goldstein, who was honored on Senior Night as the Presidents' lone senior, fired up the desparation heave which rattled home and started a wild celebration at the spot of where the shot left his hand.

The Golden Tornadoes (4-20, 0-15 PAC) took an 8-4 lead early on, but W&J dominated the rest of the half behind 15 points from Nate Bellhy.  W&J led by as many as 13 points (37-24) before settling for a 37-28 halftime lead.

Geneva began chipping away at the lead and eventually tied the game on two Pat Johnson free throws at the 13:09 mark.  W&J went back ahead by four points, but the Golden Tornadoes refused to go away and Tyler Damazo's layup with 7:22 left gave GC a 51-50 lead.

The lead was extended to three points twice inside of five minutes, but W&J clawed back to reclaim the lead 57-56 after two Mike Resnik free throws with 1:44 left to play.

Jacob Grim's driving layup put Geneva back ahead at the 1:11 mark and Trevor York's putback with 28 ticks remaining made it a 60-57 game.

Rubin-Goldstein's foul line jumper with 19 seconds left closed W&J to within one.  Geneva missed the front end of a 1-and-1 situation, but Mitch Locher's jumper fell off the rim for the Presidents.  Damazo was fouled on the rebound, but only made 1-of-2 free throws to set up Rubin-Goldstein's heroics.

Rubin-Goldstein finished the game with 10 points in his 73rd apearance in a W&J uniform.  Bellhy led W&J with 21 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.

Damazo paced the Golden Tornadoes with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Due to the results of tonight's conference games, W&J will play at Waynesburg in the quarterfinal round of the PAC Tournament Tuesday night (time TBD).  W&J closes the regular season at Bethany Saturday at 4:00 pm.
