WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College and Bethany College will wrap up their basketball regular seasons Saturday at the Hummel Field House in West Virginia.Â
Live video and stats are available online for both games starting with the women's contest at 2:00 pm.
The W&J women (17-7, 12-5 PAC) are in position to claim the No. 3 seed for next week's PAC Tournament with a victory over the Bison (7-17, 6-11 PAC). Ironically, a W&J victory would set up a PAC quarterfinal showdown between the same two teams Tuesday in Washington as Bethany is locked in as the No. 6 seed.Â
The Presidents lead the all-time series with the Bison by a 47-31 margin. W&J is looking for its second-straight season sweep of Bethany and has won nine of the last 11 games in the series. Since W&J Head Coach
Jina DeRubbo left Bethany in 2004, her Presidents' teams are 17-4 against her former school.Â
Earlier this year in Washington, 25 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and three assists from
Chelsea Apke helped the Presidents defeat the Bison 76-59. W&J led 34-28 at halftime and a 16-4 run midway through the second half put the game away. The Presidents doubled up BC in points in the paint (32-16) and owned a 42-33 rebounding edge.Â
Bethany has lost two in a row to the top two teams in the league and has allowed at least 100 points in each game. Thomas More shot 63 percent at Bethany on Wednesday during a 108-59 triumph.
Taylor Verrico leads the Bison in scoring at 13.0 points per game, while Sami Schott contributes 11.1 points per contest. Bethany has committed an average of 19.1 turnovers per game and has shot 120 more three-pointers (416-296) than its opponents.Â
Apke has been the Presidents' leader all season with 16.3 points and 9.9 rebounds. She is shooting 56.4 percent this winter which ranks 21st among all NCAA Division III players. Beha Bellhy (14.0 ppg) has come on strong of late with seven double-figure scoring games in her last eight outings.Â
Valerie Dunlap needs just one blocked shot to become W&J's all-time leader. She is currently tied with W&J Hall of Famer Leigh Sulkowski '06 with 133 career blocks.Â
The W&J men are locked into the No. 5 seed for the conference tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Waynesburg Tuesday night (7pm or 8pm; time will be announced Sunday or Monday). The Presidents, who were swept in the season series by the Yellow Jackets, will look to build momentum for the tournament by trying to knock off league-leading Bethany.Â
Bethany can clinch the No. 1 seed and hosting rights throughout the tournament with a win over the Presidents or a Saint Vincent loss at Thomas More. The Bison, the fourth-ranked team in the latest NCAA Great Lakes regional poll, have put themselves in position to host the tournament by winning seven-straight games, including recent back-to-back victories over Saint Vincent (85-65) and Thomas More (80-77). Delonte' Joyce hit five three-pointers and finished the game with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists Wednesday versus the Saints.
Joyce leads four Bison who average double figures with 17.7 points. Kevin Jackson (13.3), Lawrence Weldon (12.5) and Leslie Addy (11.6) also scored in double digits. Bethany utilizes its quickness to force over 18 turnovers per game. Joyce has 79 of BC's PAC-best 294 steals. The next closest team (Waynesburg) has 204 steals.Â
The Presidents nearly became the first PAC team to lose to Geneva on Wednesday, but
Brett Rubin-Goldstein provided
one of the more memorable shots in the program's 100-year history with his half court buzzer beater that gave W&J a 62-61 victory. Rubin-Goldstein, who also hit a jumper with 19 seconds left to put W&J in position to lead, finished with 10 points, while
Nate Bellhy produced 21 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.Â
Bellhy has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games, including four 20-plus point efforts. He shoots 45 percent overall and is 24 points shy of producing the 10th-best, single-season point total in school history.
W&J and Bethany meet on the hardwood for the 175th time with the Presidents leading the way with 94 victories. The Bison have won five-straight over the Presidents in the regular season, but W&J won at Bethany last year in the PAC quarterfinals.Â
The first game between the two teams came down to the wire as
Tyler Haas rebounded a missed free throw with two seconds left, but his fade away jumper as time expired fell off the rim and Bethany escaped 66-64. BC forced 22 turnovers and received 23 points from Kevin Jackson (10-13 FG).Â
Doug Johnson led the Presidents with 16 points (3-6 three-pointers).Â
