Box Score BETHANY, W.Va. -- Washington & Jefferson fought back from a 19-point halftime deficit to take a three-point lead with five minutes remaining; however, Bethany regrouped and earned a 72-69 victory over the Presidents in PAC men's basketball action Saturday at Hummel Field House.Â
The Bison (21-4, 14-2 PAC) earned the league's regular-season title and hosting rights throughout the conference tournament. W&J (13-12, 8-8 PAC) is the fifth seed and will play at Waynesburg Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the quarterfinal round.Â
Bethany clicked on all cylinders in the first half, shooting 50 percent (17-34) and building a 44-25 lead.Â
The second half was a different story right from the start. W&J scored the first 11 points of the half, nine of which came on three-pointers by
Doug Johnson.Â
After a free throw by Lawrence Weldon at the 12:51 mark, BC built its advantage back to 12 points (54-42), but the Presidents roared back one more time with a 13-0 spurt during a three-minute stretch. Johnson hit another triple during the run which was punctuated by a
Nate Bellhy triple at the 9:05 mark.Â
Johnson's fifth three-pointer of the second half made it a 58-56 W&J lead and
Mitch Locher's bucket at the 5:14 mark pushed the lead to 62-59.Â
Delonte' Joyce tied the game on a three-pointer and after neither team scored for a two-minute stretch, Leslie Addy netted back-to-back baskets for a 66-62 advantage. Kevin Jackson's triple with 42 seconds left pushed the lead to 69-62. Bellhy drained a three with six seconds left to bring W&J to within 71-69 and after a 1-for-2 trip to the foul line by Joyce, Johnson's desparation shot missed and Bethany escaped with the win.Â
Bellhy had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Presidents, who shot 46 percent (25-54). W&J made 15-of-25 shots in the second half. Locher added 16 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench, while Johnson finished with 15 points (5-13 three-pointers).
Jackson paced four Bison in double figures with 19 points. BC out-rebounded W&J 37-31, including grabbing 11 on the offensive end.Â
