WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College will play host to Waynesburg University Wednesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader that figures to have an impact on the seeding for the upcoming conference tournament. Both games will be streamed live by the
PAC Sports Network starting with the women's contest at 6:00 pm.Â
Waynesburg owns the upper hand after taking both games in the first doubleheader of the year on Jan. 8 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jacket women (10-9, 8-4 PAC) defeated W&J (13-6, 8-4 PAC) 77-67 and the Waynesburg men (9-11, 4-7 PAC) followed with a 75-69 triumph over the Presidents (11-9, 6-5 PAC).Â
On the women's side, W&J and Waynesburg are tied with Westminster for third place in the league standings. Saint Vincent possesses a two-game edge on all three teams for second place. With a win Wednesday, Waynesburg would own a key tiebreaker in the battle for the No. 3 spot for the conference tournament. W&J swept the season series from Westminster. The Lady Titans claimed the first game of their season series with Waynesburg (78-71) on Jan. 11 and the schools will play again at Marisa Fieldhouse next Saturday.Â
The W&J men currently hold a one-game lead over Grove City for the No. 4 spot in the league standings. The Yellow Jackets are two games back, but are still in contention as they close their PAC slate with three-straight home games. W&J has three of its final four games on the road, including away games at second-place Bethany and third-place Thomas More.Â
W&J and Waynesburg are meeting in women's basketball for the 52nd time with W&J leading 37-14. Waynesburg has had the better of play of late; however, winning seven of the last eight meetings. The Presidents have lost three in a row to the Yellow Jackets in Washington.
In the first women's game between the two schools, Waynesburg shot 57 percent in the second half and limited the Presidents to 35 percent shooting overall to earn the 10-point win. W&J dominated early on, racing out to a 19-4 lead before the host Yellow Jackets roared back. WU narrowed the deficit to 35-32 at halftime and then hit 5-of-9 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes to complete the comeback. The Yellow Jackets, who overcame 21 turnovers, received 15 point-efforts from Lauren Blair and Hayden Giuliani. Â
Chelsea Apke led the Presidents with 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals.Â
Waynesburg had a two-game win streak snapped Saturday when sixth-ranked Thomas More rolled to a 95-63 road win. The Yellow Jackets hung tough in the first half and only trailed 36-31 at the break despite only shooting 30 percent. TMC turned it on in the second half, making 22-of-33 shots. Courtney Sargent paced the Yellow Jackets with 17 points and 10 rebounds.Â
The Yellow Jackets rank 26th in NCAA Division III in three-point makes per game (7.2). Giuliani is the team's top threat from beyond the arc as her 43.8 percent accuracy ranks 13th nationally. She leads the team with 10.9 points per game. Ten different Yellow Jackets average 3.5 points or more per game.Â
Apke leads W&J and ranks 91st in NCAA Division III in scoring at 17.2 points per game. Washington & Jefferson is third in the league in scoring offense (73.8 ppg) and second in scoring defense (65.6 ppg); however, the Presidents have struggled with their outside shooting. With 79 three-pointers, only Grove City (47) has made fewer among PAC teams. On the flip side, Waynesburg is second in the league with 137 triples. Â
The W&J and Waynesburg men are meeting for the 100th time in history in a series which dates back to 1922. On Feb. 24, 1922, the two schools met for the first time, a 29-28 W&J win in Washington. Washington & Jefferson leads the all-time series 56-43 and has claimed 15 of the last 17 meetings.Â
Christian Koroly made the difference in the first men's meeting this year as he scored 14 points (all in first half) off the bench. Waynesburg led by as many as 22 points (55-33 with 14:31 remaining) before W&J's late rally fell just short.Â
Nate Bellhy led the Presidents with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Koroly led four Yellow Jacket double figure scorers. Byrum Louco finished with 13 points despite only attempting one shot from the floor. He made 10-of-14 free throws. All 10 Yellow Jackets who saw action grabbed a rebound and nine of them scored.Â
Since that victory, Waynesburg has lost four of six with the victories coming against Thiel (79-76, OT) and Grove City (63-60). The Yellow Jackets are 3-8 on the road this winter and have two players averaging double figure scoring totals: Jason Propst (12.2 ppg) and Thomas Ellis (11.5 ppg). Like the WU women's team, head Coach Mark Christner has a deep bench as 11 players average at least 13 minutes per game.Â
Bellhy averages 19.0 points and 10.3 rebounds in three career meetings with Waynesburg. He is shooting 45 percent from the field in those contests and has made at least four baskets each time. He is third in the conference in both scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg).Â
Doug Johnson has developed into one of the PAC's top three-point shooters since the start of his sophomore season. He is shooting 44 percent (79-of-179) from long distance during that stretch, including a recent run of 21-of-43 three-point shooting (48.8 percent) since Jan. 11. He has connected on at least one triple in seven-straight games.Â
