Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Waynesburg swept the season series from Washington & Jefferson for the first time in 10 years after posting an 82-77 PAC men's basketball victory on Wednesday night at the Henry Memorial Center.Â
The Yellow Jackets (10-11, 5-7 PAC) held the lead for the final 19 minutes of the game. Waynesburg knocked down 8-of-19 three-pointers and received 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting (3-of-3 triples) from Jacob Fleegle.Â
Waynesburg started the game on an 8-2 run and that marked the biggest lead of the first half. The Yellow Jackets held on to the lead for a majority of the half, but the Presidents closed to within 40-39 at halftime after
Doug Johnson's late trifecta. Johnson extended his streak with at least one three-pointer to eight games.Â
Mike Resnik scored the first basket of the second half to put W&J ahead 41-40, but that was the last lead the Presidents would have. Byrum Louco answered with a jumper which ignited a 7-0 WU spurt.Â
Mitch Locher knocked down a jump shot at the 12:02 mark to bring the Presidents back to within one (58-57), but Fleegle followed with two free throws and then a three-pointer just over three minutes later.Â
Johnson's free throws at the 5:47 mark once again brought W&J to within one (65-64); however, Fleegle once again had the answer. With four minutes left, Louco rebounded his own missed three-point attempt and followed up with a basket and free throw for a 70-66 advantage. Kenny Klase's off-balanced jumper stretched the lead to 74-68 with 1:50 left and WU made nine free throws in the final 93 seconds to seal the win.Â
Brett Rubin-Goldstein kept the Presidents (11-10, 6-6) in the game with back-to-back triples in the final 75 seconds, but the Presidents came up just short. Rubin-Goldstein finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists, while
Nate Bellhy finished with a team-high 15 points. Resnik and Johnson both netted 14.Â
W&J shot 48 percent (27-56), but was out-rebounded 33-30. The teams combined to only commit 19 turnovers (10 W&J).Â
The Presidents travel to Crestview Hills, Ky., Saturday for a 3:00 pm matchup with the Thomas More Saints.Â
