W&J volleyball improves to 3-1 with wins at La Roche tourney

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team rebounded from an opening day loss to Bluffton with a trio of 3-0 victories on the second day of the La Roche tournament.

With the wins, the Presidents improve to 3-1 on the season with 3-0 wins over Waynesburg (25-13, 25-17, 25-15), Pitt-Greensburg (25-15, 26-24, 25-15) and Alfred (25-17, 25-8, 25-12).

Against Waynesburg, in a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference match, Lindsey Bennett led the team with 12 kills and a .529 hitting percentage. Emily Toy directed the offense for 14 assists and Nicole Bishwaty posted four service aces. Defensively, Allison Means led with 11 digs and Bennett led with three blocks.

In the UPG match, Bennett had a team-best nine kills, while Taylor Freeman added eight kills and Alexis Hilzendeger tallied seven kills. Megan Stoehr registered 14 assists and Bishwaty again had four aces. Means and Toy were both in double digits for digs with 12 and 11, respectively. Bennett had four blocks and Freeman added three in the win.

In the last match of the day, Bishwaty led with eight kills and Bennett added four. Toy posted eight assists and Bennett had four aces. Means totaled 10 digs, and Bennett and Bishwaty each totaled two blocks.

W&J returns to action, opening PAC play with a tri-match at Geneva on Friday, Sept. 12. The Presidents begin with a 6 p.m. match against Saint Vincent before taking on the host Golden Tornadoes at 8 p.m.
