Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Four goal first half sends W&J to sixth straight win, 6-2

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Thanks to a four-goal first half, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team cruised to a 6-2 win in the 2015 nonconference finale against Oberlin.

The victory pushes the Presidents to 10-7 on the season and gives W&J six consecutive wins, matching the longest streak since winning six in a row from Oct. 17 to Nov. 6, 2010. It also puts the Presidents in double figures for wins for the sixth-straight season.

Laura O'Malley scored the first goal of both halves, putting W&J ahead, 1-0, and 5-0. Amanda Steffey, Lauren Brown and Caroline Kallos each scored to wrap up the first half and give the home team a 4-0 lead through 35 minutes.

After O'Malley's second goal opened the second-half scoring, Steffey posted her second of the game and 12th of the season to match her career high, which came last season.

The Yeowomen found the back of the net twice after that to make the final score 6-2.

Steffey collected two assists in the game, with Allison Morrissey, Brown and Claire Shaak each contributing one.

Thanks to a balanced 10 shots per half, W&J led the game 20-6, with Steffey matching Oberlin's total in recording six shots. O'Malley fired five shots and Morrissey and Brown each registered three.

Morgan Brozena earned the win, making one save in playing the first 35 minutes to improve to 10-7. The save gives her 215 for her career, leaving her four behind Shelby Colyer for second place on the all-time list at W&J. Shelby Howell added a defensive save for the Presidents, and Karlie Baran made one in goal during the second half.

The Presidents close out the 2015 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31 with a 1 p.m. Empire 8 game against Houghton. If W&J wins, they earn a spot in next weekend's E8 tournament. Prior to the game, W&J will honor its five seniors.
