CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The No. 13/13 Washington & Jefferson football team suffered a 38-20 Presidents' Athletic Conference defeat at No. 14/12 Thomas More in a battle of Top 15 teams.
Quarterback
Pete Coughlin tied a school record with 58 pass attempts in the loss and threw for 360 yards, the second-highest total of his career. He completed 34 of those attempts and tossed one touchdown, however was tagged for four interceptions. Coughlin tied the pass attempt mark set by Bobby Swallow in 2008, also at Thomas More.
Wide receiver
Daniel Lis was Coughlin's favorite target, matching his career high with 11 catches for a game-high 155 yards. His previous career high came in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs last season at Wittenberg.
Ryan Ruffing nabbed eight passes for 49 yards and
Jesse Zubik made seven receptions for 115 yards and a score. It was the first time W&J two Presidents went over 100 yards since last year at Grove City (Zubik and
Max Creighan).
Defensively,
O'Shea Anderson shined, making a career-high 11 tackles, including 2.0 for loss and his first career sack.
Ryan Torrance and
Jalen Morris both tallied nine stops and
Luke Merhaut added eight. It was the first career start for both Morris and Merhaut, the latter of whom also recorded his first career interception, the lone takeaway for the visitors.
The Presidents (3-1, 1-1) got on the board first with a 25-yard field goal by
Ted Ford 6:30 into the first quarter. The Saints (5-0, 3-0) answered back with a 25-yard strike from Jensen Gebhardt to Goose Cohorn to take a 7-3 lead 3:28 later. The final score of the first quarter saw the Presidents climb back on top as Zubik got behind the Saints defense and went in from 28 yards out, 10-7.
Two TMC touchdown passes sandwiched a Ford field goal in the second quarter as the Saints took a 21-13 lead into intermission.
In the second half, a one-yard run by Ruffing, cutting the margin to 24-20 with six minutes left in the third quarter, was the only score for the Presidents as Thomas More found points off a field goal and two rushing touchdowns by CT Tarrant.
W&J will host Grove City at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a Homecoming match-up at Cameron Stadium.
