BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson football team rebounded from last week's loss with a 34-13 victory at Geneva to improve to 6-2 on the season and clinch the program's 32nd-straight winning season.
The 32 consecutive winning seasons represent the fourth-longest active streak in all of NCAA football, behind only Linfield (60), Florida State (39) and Mount Union (37).
Pete Coughlin topped 300 yards through the air for the ninth time in his career and fourth time this season. He passed for 351 yards to go over 6,000 yards for his career, and added three touchdowns on 18-of-26.
Eric Scott caught eight of the passes from Coughlin for a career-high 135 yards and a score.
Asa Costelnock pulled in two passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, a 70-yarder on the first play of the second half.
Jesse Zubik had three receptions for 75 yards and a 61-yard catch-and-run to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Ryan Ruffing, who went over 100 yards for the fourth-straight game and sixth time this season, opened the scoring on the final play of the first quarter from three yards out. In total, he toted the ball 30 times for 138 yards.
Geneva answered back 1:47 into the second quarter on a five-yard run, 7-7.
Ted Ford kicked the first of his two field goals on the night at the 10:21 mark of the second period, this one from 22 yards out, to make it 10-7. A Geneva FG made it 10-10 with 3:25 to play in the half and Ford made a 25-yarder with five ticks left in the frame to send the guests into the locker room ahead, 13-10.
W&J received the opening kick in the second half and the first play was the 70-yard pass from Coughlin to Costelnock.
The Presidents' defense forced a three-and-out and then W&J embarked on an eight-play, 56-yard drive that ended when Coughlin hit Scott in the back corner of the end zone on a leaping grab to push the lead to 27-10.
Geneva added a field goal early in the fourth quarter that made it 27-13 and then ensuing possession was capped on the 61-yard TD catch by Zubik.
For the game, the Presidents' out-gained the Golden Tornadoes, 560-237, thanks to a 360-137 advantage through the air.
Ryan Torrance led all players with 12 tackles.
Justin Bauer made eight stops, including 2.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack.
Jalen Morris also finished with eight tackles in the game.
Bryce Merrill made four tackles, but made them count as 3.5 were for loss.
Ryan Snedeker had a solo sack and Merrill combined with
Sly Revitsky on another.
The Presidents will return home to Cameron Stadium to wrap up the 2015 regular season with a pair of contests, the first of which is Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. against Thiel.
