W&J sends out seniors with 45-23 win over Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson football team closed out the 2015 campaign and sent its seniors out in style with a 45-23 win over Waynesburg.

With the victory, the Presidents end the season with an 8-2 overall record and 6-2 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. It marks the 32nd consecutive winning season for the program, dating back to 1984. After the eight wins in 2015, W&J has won at least eight games in 28 seasons during the streak.

Pete Coughlin passed for 370 yards and four touchdowns on 21-of-26, Jesse Zubik made eight catches for 184 yards and a score and Colin Jones established career highs in his finale with a game-high nine grabs for 87 yards and a touchdown.

After the Presidents forced a Yellow Jackets' punt on the first drive of the game, W&J went 75 yards on eight plays, capped by a 15-yard run by Ryan Ruffing, his league-leading 21st rushing touchdown of the season, 51st of his career and 56th total score, 7-0.

The ensuing drive by Waynesburg led to a three-and-out by the W&J defense, however a fumble through the back of the end zone gave Waynesburg a safety and the football. After turning the possession into a four-play touchdown drive, the Yellow Jackets took their only lead of the day, 9-7, with 7:00 to play in the first quarter.

Just 1:45 later, Coughlin connected with Jones on a 16-yard scoring strike to give the lead back for good, 14-9. On the first play of the second quarter, Blake Davis knocked down a 29-yard field goal to make it a 17-9 game.

After forcing a punt on Waynesburg's next possession, W&J needed just one play as Coughlin found Asa Costelnock who broke multiple tackles en route to a 59-yard jaunt to the end zone, 24-9. Another three-and-out gave W&J the ball back which led to a 75-yard, four-play drive capped by a 53-yard strike to Zubik. The touchdown made the game 31-9, which stood as the halftime score. Coughlin tossed for 298 yards in the first half alone.

The opening drive of the third quarter saw the Presidents turn the ball over on the first play from scrimmage, but get the ball back four plays later and turn the drive into seven points, ending with a 16-yard scoring scamper by Coughlin, 38-9. A Waynesburg TD at the 8:22-mark of the quarter was the final score of the period, leading to a 38-16 score through 45 minutes.

At the 13:13 mark of the fourth quarter, Coughlin found Eric Scott in the end zone from 10 yards out on third down to cap the Presidents' scoring at 45-16. Waynesburg later added a 44-yard passing touchdown to make the final 45-23.

Ruffing finished with 147 yards on 26 carries, ending his career at 3,218 yards, 25 yards shy of fifth place on the W&J career list. His 56 career scores leave him third in program history.

For Coughlin, it marked the 11th time over 300 yards in his career. Three of his top four passing yard totals have come during his four-game streak of 300-plus yard games. He ends his junior campaign with career numbers of 6,869 yards (ninth in PAC history) and 60 touchdowns (eighth all-time in the conference).

Zubik's 184-yard performance was the 10th time in 21 games he's gone over 100 yards and represent the third-highest total of his career. Despite playing in only nine games this season, Zubik finished with 55 catches for 1,054 yards and nine scores. Through two seasons and 21 games, he has 110 receptions, 1,935 yards and 19 touchdowns (10th in PAC history).

Defensively, Jalen Morris recorded a career-high and matched the second-highest total in program history with 18 tackles on the day, one more than his previous benchmark of 17 earlier this season at Case Western Reserve. After beginning the year as a reserve linebacker, Morris started the final seven games of his senior season and made 75 stops in those contests to finish with 78 on the year and 101 for his career.

Luke Merhaut made nine tackles and Dan Graziano and Lucas Parrish each contributed six. Bryce Merrill made five solo tackles, including one for loss and intercepted a pass. Justin Bauer and Tom Marra each made a sack, with Marra posted 2.0 TFL and Bauer 1.5.
