WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the 2015 Hyatt Place Pittsburgh South Women's Basketball Tournament with a 73-62 semifinal win over Pitt-Greensburg.
The win evens the Presidents at 1-1 on the year and drops the Bobcats to 0-2. W&J will take on Otterbein, a 62-59 winner over Wittenberg in the first semifinal, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 in the tournament championship game. UPG will square off with Wittenberg in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 29 points, two shy of her career high of 31 set last season at UPG. It was the 15th time in her career she has scored 20-plus points and she moved into 13th place on the W&J career scoring list at 1,068. The senior also recorded her fifth career double-double by pulling down a career-best 14 rebounds. She was a force in the second half, totaling 21 points and 11 rebounds over the final 20 minutes.
Danielle Parker, playing in just her second collegiate game and making her first career start, reached double figures in rebounds for the first time at 10. She also scored eight points, blocked four shots and added four steals.
Taylor Cortazzo and
Danni Medovich each posted nine points and three assists.
The Bobcats scored the opening basket just seconds into the game after winning the tip, and the two teams were knotted four times in the early stages, with the last tie of the game coming at 3:06 left in the first period at 9-9. A three-point play by Mya Gordon gave W&J a 12-9 lead and put the Presidents ahead for good.In the second quarter, UPG got the game within two at the 7:19 mark, but a 7-0 run thanks to two buckets in the paint by Parker and a triple by Cortazzo stretched the lead to nine, 28-19, with 5:44 to play in the first half. After maintaining the lead around nine points thanks to a Parker layup at 4:09, the Bobcats cut the lead to four at the half thanks to a 6-1 run down the stretch.The opening points of the third quarter were a triple by UPG's Emily Nelson that made the game 33-32, but six-straight points and 12 of the next 14 led to an 11-point lead for W&J around the midway point of the period.W&J maintained a double-digit lead for most of the fourth quarter, maxing out the margin at 15 with 3:14 to play on a three-point play by Bellhy en route to the 73-62 victory.For the game, W&J held a 48-42 edge on the glass and shot better from the field (43.3 percent to 31.8 percent). The Presidents also held a commanding advantage on points in the paint, outscoring the Bobcats 50-20 from close range, including 28-6 in the second half, 14 in each quarter.
