WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team was eliminated from the 2015 Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament by Grove City on penalty kicks at Alexandre Stadium.
The match, officially a scoreless draw as regulation and both overtimes brought zero goals to force a penalty-kick shootout, was decided by a 6-5 margin in seven rounds of the shootout. The third-seeded Wolverines advance to Saturday's PAC Championship match at Thomas More and move their record to 11-5-4 on the season. The Presidents, the second seed in the league, end a stellar 2015 campaign at 14-2-2.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net through 110 minutes, although it appeared that Grove City had won the game following a corner kick in the closing second of double overtime when the ball found the back of the net with under one second remaining, but a Wolverines' player was called offside and time ran out to signify the conclusion of playing time and sending the squads to a shootout.
Grove City's Jordyn White was the first shooter and was successful in her attempt.
Hayley Skovira began the Presidents' initial five shooters and hit the crossbar placing the advantage to the Wolverines.
The next four combined attempts were good as
Emilee Handyside and
Brianna Floryshak scored for W&J and Grove City held a 3-2 lead after three rounds. The fourth round began with
Allison Rinehimer stonewalling Natalie Silk and ended with
Molly Peddicord knotting the PKs at 3-3.
Abigail DeIuliis and
Josie Madden answered Wolverines successful attempts with their own as it was 5-5 through six rounds. The seventh and final round saw Grove City's Lindsay Hutton score before Nicole Lapia was able to turn away
Aundrea Snyder and put the Wolverines into the championship match for the third-straight season.
In the match, the Presidents held a commanding 23-10 advantage on shots, but both teams placed seven on cage.
Jordan Toohey led all players with five shots, while
Tatiana Ruzzini, Madden and Skovira each posted four.
The shutout gave Rinehimer seven on the season and the team 11 overall. The sophomore keeper finished the season with a 10-2-2 record and 0.80 goals against average.
