Presidents post 33-point PAC opening win over Grove City

By Danielle Kochka, Sports Information Assistant

Washington, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team kicked off Presidents' Athletic Conference action with a definitive 77-44 victory over the Grove City College Wolverines.

The Presidents left nothing to doubt from the very beginning of the game. By the end of the first quarter, W&J held a comfortable 27-6 lead over the Wolverines, led by junior Taylor Cortazzo's eight first-quarter points. The Wolverines would show battle back in the second quarter, outscoring the Presidents 16-15 to get the game to a score of 42-22 at the half.

W&J shut down any threat of a Wolverine comeback by the start of the second half, exploding out of the gate and outscoring the Wolverines 21-13 in the third quarter. That was enough to allow the Presidents to cruise through the fourth quarter and seal their first PAC victory of the 2015-16 season.

The scoring for W&J was evenly spread out as seven players scored seven-or-more points. Cortazzo finished the game with a team high of 12 points, shooting 5-7 from the field. Danni Medovich knocked down 10 points, including two three-point field goals. Senior Beka Bellhy finished with nine points. India March, Rachel Bellhy and Danielle Parker each finished with eight points. Parker also managed to bring down a game-high seven rebounds.

Grove City's Lexie Arkwright led all players with 14 points on the night.

W&J moves to 5-1 overall, and jump out to a 1-0 start in PAC play. The Presidents next game will be on December 5th at the Henry Memorial Center, hosting Chatham in PAC action. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 P.M.
