UW-La Crosse upends W&J, 6-3

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Wisconsin-La Crosse used a four-run second inning to defeat the Washington & Jefferson baseball team 6-3.

With the loss, W&J falls to 3-2 after seeing its three-game winning streak come to an end. The Eagles improve to 2-1 to open the year in Florida.

UW-L struck first with four runs in the bottom of the second, including a bases-clearing double by 2014 First Team All-American Taylor Kohlwey.

W&J scored a run in the top of the third on an RBI single by Nick Vento that drove in Derek Helbing who singled to left field to lead off. The Eagles plated a run in the third and fourth innings to build a 6-1 lead through four.

In the sixth, W&J added two runs to get within 6-3. Michael Ruffing singled up the middle to lead off but was replaced at first when Vento reached on a fielder's choice. Kyle Smith singled to left to put runners on first and second and Jake Gordon reached on a pinch-hit fielder's choice to load the bases when the attempt to throw out Smith at second failed. Morton singled to right to score Vento and then Smith scored on a fielder's choice by Anthony Paladino.

UWL posted 10 hits to W&J's six, with Kohlwey going three-for-four with four RBI. Morton led the Presidents with two hits and a stolen base.

Trevor Kerr suffered the loss, working 5.2 innings and yielding 10 hits and six earned runs with four strike outs, a walk and a hit batter. Nick Comport went 2.1 innings of hitless relief with two strike outs and a walk.

The Presidents play Allegheny on Tuesday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Stadium in Auburndale.
