HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Washington & Jefferson College tennis programs traveled to South Carolina during spring break and began their competition Monday.  The W&J men (1-5) dropped 9-0 decisions to NCAA Division II Shepherd and NAIA Division II Georgetown (Ky.) and also fell to Scranton 6-3.  

Micah Byrum was a perfect 2-0 for the Presidents against Scranton as he claimed his No. 4 singles match (4-6, 6-2 -- 10-2 tiebreaker) and joined Renato Popovic for an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles.  Byrum was the lone W&J player to record a singles victory.  

The Presidents' women (13-4) began their spring season with a 9-0 loss to Georgetown (Ky.) before bouncing back to defeat Shepherd 6-3.  

In the win over Shepherd, Grace McCarthy earned a pair of team points as she defeated Stacy Brewbaker (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2 singles and teamed with Courtney Brennan to post an 8-3 No. 1 doubles triumph.

The men's team takes on Goucher (Md.) Thursday at 3:30 pm in Hilton Head.
