AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson split with The College of New Jersey, dropping a 7-5 decision in the opener before rallying for a 2-0 win in the nightcap to wrap up Spring Break action in Florida.
With the split, the Presidents return north with a 6-3 overall record after going 5-2 in the Sunshine State. TCNJ moves to 5-4 this year.
Riley Groves earned the complete-game shutout in game two to improve to 3-0 on the year and collect his second victory in Florida. He worked all seven innings and allowed just six hits, while striking out eight and walking none. In 104 total pitches, he secured 12 fly outs and three ground outs in the win.
W&J scored in the top of the first inning to begin the second game when
Gannon Rooney singled to lead off and stole second. He would advance to third on a single by
Nick Vento and score on a sacrifice fly by
Kyle Smith, 1-0.
The Presidents tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when an RBI single by Vento brought home
Dan Trettel who was hit by a pitch to open the frame.
It was more than enough for Groves who was near dominant for most of the afternoon in earning the win -- the second shutout he's started this season for W&J (5-0 win over West Liberty on March 11).
Rooney and Vento both finished with a pair of hits in the win.
In the opener, the Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to a pair of runs in the third and five runs in the fourth. W&J answered with one in the bottom of the fourth after three-straight singles to lead off, but the inning stalled after that.
W&J rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth after the first four batters reached base and RBI credited to Smith,
Nelson McKown and
Anthony Paladino.
Jake Gordon added the fifth run with a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side that took a big "Florida hop" over the third baseman's head. It would be the final runs in the game, however, as W&J dropped the 7-5 decision.
Jared Baird suffered the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year, working 4.0 innings and yielding 10 hits, seven runs (three earned), with five strike outs and two walks.
Alex Carr worked 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out one.
Smith went 3-for-3 to lead the Presidents, while Vento and McKown each posted two hits and Vento scored two runs.
W&J returns home to open up Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Monday, March 23 with a 4 p.m. meeting with Thiel at Ross Memorial Park.
