Presidents use eighth-inning rally to top Bethany 7-4

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 7-4 win over Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The Presidents trailed, 4-3, entering the home half of the eighth. With one out, Anthony Paladino singled to left center. A two-out, pinch-hit single by Jake Gordon put runners at first and second and forced a Bethany pitching change. A walk to Ryan Sciullo loaded the bases which led to three-straight RBI singles by Gannon Rooney (two runs to left field), Michael Ruffing (RBI through the right side) and Nick Vento (RBI to right field).

Riley Groves set the Bison down, one-two-three in the top of the ninth to hold on for the 7-4 victory and pick up his team- and PAC-leading fourth win of the season (4-0). Groves worked the final 3.0 innings and allowed two hits and three unearned runs with three strike outs in relief of Jared Baird who received a no-decision after scattering five hits and striking out five through the first 6.0 innings.

W&J (9-4, 2-0 PAC) had held a 2-1 lead thanks to an RBI double by Nick Morton in the fourth and the first homer of Sciullo's career, an opposite-field solo shot, in the fifth.

The Bison (4-9, 0-4) picked up three unearned runs in the seventh off of Groves, but an RBI single by Ruffing in the seventh moved the Presidents to within one and set up the rally in the eighth.

Ruffing posted a game-best three hits in finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI. Paladino and Sciullo each notched two hits, one being an extra-base hit, and Sciullo scored a game-high two runs. Ruffing and Rooney each drove in a pair runs.

The Presidents' single nine-inning contest against No. 22 Marietta originally scheduled for Thursday, March 26 has been pushed back a day to Friday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m.
