Mulvey goes the distance in 2-1 win at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Tim Mulvey tossed a complete game in his first start of the season to help the Presidents' earn a 2-1 win at Westminster.

Washington & Jefferson baseball improves to 11-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Westminster falls to 9-14 on the year and 3-6 in league play. The two teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 4 with a doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park slated to begin at 1 p.m.

Mulvey (2-0) retired the first 11 hitters he faced on the day, not allowing a runner to reach base until a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth. The lone threat on the day from the Titans' offense came in the bottom of the ninth after three singles in the first four hitters loaded the bases. Then, with two outs, Mulvey hit a batter to bring in a run, but forced the next batter to fly out to center field, ending the game. The southpaw, who entered the day having thrown just 5.2 innings over five relief appearances, worked all 9.0 innings, scattering eight hits and giving up just the one earned run while striking out eight. He also forced 13 ground outs and got nine outs in the air.

Kyle Borton was the tough-luck loser for the home team, dropping to 0-6 this season. He also went the distance, giving up just six hits and one earned run (two total).

Both of W&J's runs came in the top of the second. Kyle Smith singled to lead off and a walk to Anthony Paladino put runners on first and second. With one out, Nick Morton reached on an error that allowed Smith to score. With two outs, Cory Bauer singled to bring home Paladino and put the Presidents ahead 2-0.

Bauer and Smith both had 2-for-4 showings at the plate, with Bauer posting the only extra-base hit of the game in a double and driving in the lone W&J RBI. Michael Ruffing and Derek Helbing had the other W&J hits as Nick Vento saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end, one contest shy of his career long.
