WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team dropped the opener of the three-game series with Waynesburg by a score of 18-10 in Greene County.
With the loss, the Presidents drop to 19-11 overall and 11-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Waynesburg improves to 17-13-1 on the year, but 15-4 in the PAC. The two teams wrap up the season series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 24 at Ross Memorial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
W&J scored two runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by
Frank Fortunato and
Derek Helbing to take a 2-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets plated six runs in the bottom of the frame to chase starter
Joe Vita (3-2) who gave up seven earned in 1.2 innings after having allowed just eight runs and five earned through 44.0 innings entering the game.
Despite the first-career homers by
Cory Bauer and
Jake Gordon later in the game, W&J was unable to get back in the contest.
The Presidents pounded out 19 hits on the day as the two teams combined for 35 hits, 28 runs, 11 extra-base hits and nine walks.
Kyle Smith posted a 3-for-4 day and scored two runs to lead W&J.
Nick Vento and
Anthony Paladino each had two hits and
Justin Zak, Smith and
Dan Trettel contributed doubles.
Bryce Schnatterly was effective in one inning of relief for the second straight game, facing the minimum for the third time in his three appearances this season.
