PS-Behrend blanks W&J in quick doubleheader at Brooks Park

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson wrapped up its 2015 home schedule at Brooks Park Tuesday after being swept in a non-conference softball doubleheader by Penn State-Behrend.  Both games ended in 1-0 final scores.

PSB pitcher Rachel Miller silenced the W&J bats in the 63-minute opener as she allowed just a pair of hits.  Game two lasted only three minutes longer and Miller provided the lone run with a two-out single in the top of the seventh.

Miller did not allow a W&J base hit until Emily Watson's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Morgan Figura led off the seventh with a single, but W&J was unable to plate the tying run.  Miller finished with seven strikeouts and improved her record to 12-3.

The Lions (21-13) scored their only run in the fourth when Allania Banta reached on an error and scored on Alexa Bupp's two-out double.

Krista McCartney saw her record dip to 8-8 despite a strong outing.  She limited the Lions to five hits and struck out a pair.

Miller was the hero in game two as well, this time with her bat.  She played right field in the second contest and her two-out bloop single to center field in the seventh scored Julia Luke with the only run of the game.

The Presidents (18-16) nearly won the game in the bottom half of the seventh as Megan Staab singled and Chalese Wilson followed with a double.  However, Bupp came on to record the final two outs for her first save.

Natalie Brock was the winning pitcher in game two.  She held the Presidents to six hits and only issued one walk.  Bethany Shepherd suffered the loss for W&J after limiting PSB to only five hits.  She struck out three and walked a pair.

Emily Watson had two hits in the nightcap to lead the W&J offense.

W&J now sets its focus on the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament and the third-seeded Presidents will face second-seeded Thomas More at 10:00 am Friday in Bethany, W.Va.
