Eleven hits not enough in 10-7 loss at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Five Presidents posted multi-hit games as Washington & Jefferson dropped a 10-7 nonconference decision at Muskingum.

With the loss, W&J drops to 22-14 on the season. The Muskies improve to 11-24 on the season after defeating the Presidents for the third time in the last four seasons.

After falling behind, 4-0 in the first inning, RBI singles by Jake Gordon and Derek Helbing got the Presidents on the board, 4-2. Muskingum, however, added three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-2 lead through two innings.

A three-run homer, his first of the season, by Kyle Smith brought W&J within 7-5 in the top of the third and then Anthony Paladino scored when Frank Fortunato reached on an error and Gordon delivered another RBI single to tie the game in the fourth.

The Muskies scored a run in the sixth and added two more on a home run in the seventh for the 10-7 win.

Smith finished 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored, while Gordon drove in two in going 2-for-4 with a walk. Paladino scored twice to go with his two hits, and Gannon Rooney (one run) and Derek Helbing (one RBI) each posted a pair of base knocks.

The Presidents used eight pitchers in the game, with Alex Carr suffering the loss after giving up a run on one hit in the sixth. Tyler Dean threw a perfect fifth inning of relief.

W&J wraps up the regular season with a three-game Presidents' Athletic Conference series against Geneva this weekend. The series opens with a single, nine-inning game in Beaver Falls at 4:30 p.m.
