WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College dedicated the brand new Janet Swanson Tennis Center on Friday afternoon and then the women's tennis team christened the courts with an 8-1 win over Bethany to open the 2015 season.
With the win, the Presidents begin the year 1-0 and 1-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Bethany drops to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the PAC.
Earlier in the afternoon, Michael Grzesiak, Vice Presidents for Development and Alumni Relations, welcomed the over 100 people assembled before handing the microphone over to Director of Athletics,
Scott McGuinness, who thanked everyone who made the new tennis courts possible, exclaiming that it was "a great day to be a President!" College President, Dr. Tori Haring-Smith gave some remarks, thanking Dr. Scott Leaf '76 and the centers namesake, Janet L. Swanson, for their generous contributions to the College.
After a ribbon-cutting ceremony officially marked the courts open for play, the women's tennis team took the court against the Bison and began with three victories at doubles and five 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles competiton.
The Presidents begin a four-match road swing on Sunday, Sept. 13 with a 2 p.m. match at NCAA Division II Alderson Broaddus.
