Football returns to winning ways, races past Thiel 62-14

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- One of the best offenses in the country was on display once again, as Washington & Jefferson rolled up 601 yards of total offense in a 62-14 win at Thiel.

The victory evens W&J's Presidents' Athletic Conference record at 1-1, while bringing the Presidents to 3-1 overall on the year. The Tomcats drop to 2-3 overall and 1-2 within the league under first-year leader Dan Blume.

Jesse Zubik (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) continued to torment the Tomcats, hauling in 10 catches for 199 yards and three scores, all season highs. The 199 yards represents a career high, besting his previous mark of 196 yards at Case Western Reserve on Oct. 24, 2015. In three career games against Thiel, Zubik has 23 receptions for 556 yards and eight touchdowns.

Pete Coughlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) completed 17-of-20 passes (85.0 percent) for 319 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. His passing efficiency rating was 301.48, which is the third-best in both PAC and W&J history. He set both records earlier this season against Grove City with his mark of 383.3.

Jake Cullen (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) hauled in the other two TD receptions as part of his two catches for 58 yards. Austin Kemp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) recorded a career high with 97 yards on the ground, toting the ball 14 times and reaching the end zone once.

W&J jumped out to a 14-0 lead through 15 minutes thanks to a 35-yard TD reception by Zubik and 13-yard rush by Kemp. Only 28 seconds into the second quarter, Zubik corralled his second touchdown of the day, this one from 40 yards out to push the lead to 21-0. The Presidents struck again at 13:34 after a Zach Walker (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) interception gave W&J the ball back on Thiel's second play of the ensuing possession. Coughlin ran in from eight yards out on the first play and extended the lead to 28-0. The defense forced a Thiel three-and-out, which the offense turned into points on the second play of the drive when Cullen caught his first TD pass, a score from 31 yards.

Thiel got on the board on a 44-yard TD catch in the closing second of the first half and W&J took a 35-7 lead into intermission.

Eight offensive plays and 2:33 of game time into the second half, the Presidents lead was pushed out to 49-7 after scoring strikes of 27 and 14 yards to Cullen and Zubik, respectively.

The Tomcats got another TD back at 3:41 of the third quarter following an 18-play drive that took 8:42, but Alex Rowse (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) ran into the end zone from 10 yards out at 2:24 to give the guests a 56-14 advantage. Ted Ford (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) and Blake Davis (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) made 27- and 31-yard field goals, respectively, in the fourth quarter to give the final margin of 62-14.

W&J's defense held Thiel under 300 yards of total offense at 283 (111 rushing, 172 passing), recording 3.0 sacks and 11.0 tackles for loss. Luke Merhaut (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) led with eight tackles (six solo), while Nick Getz (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone) was second with five stops (all solo), including a TFL. John Loper (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), Freddie McKissick (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) and Ryan Snedeker (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) all recorded sacks, with both of Snedeker's tackles being for loss. Tim Blair Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) recorded W&J's second interception, the sixth of his career.

Homecoming 2016 will be centered around next weekend's match-up against Carnegie Mellon which is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Cameron Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 8.
