Steffey's five points returns W&J to Empire 8 tournament

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored two goals and assisted on Rachel Buyan's (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) game-winner as Washington & Jefferson punched its ticket back to the Empire 8 Field Hockey Tournament with a 3-2 win over Stevens on Senior Day at Cameron Stadium.

The Presidents improve to 14-4 overall this season and move to 5-3 in the league. After the rest of the conference's games are finished today, we will know where the Presidents fall as far as seeding for the league championship event which will be hosted by top-seeded St. John Fisher on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 4-5. Stevens falls to 5-3 in the E8 and 9-9 overall.

Steffey opened the scoring 7:14 into the game when she dribbled in and scored her 11th goal of the season. The Ducks knotted the game, 1-1, 23:22 into play when Nolie Prouty finished off a cross from Victoria Alvarez.

After a tied halftime score, Steffey again gave W&J the advantage when she took the team lead with her 12th goal. She fired in from the top of the circle off a penalty corner entry pass from Buyan just 3:13 into the second half. The Ducks were quick to answer, however, tying the game 3:18 later on a Taylor Welch goal.

It took until there was 12:08 left in the match for the Presidents to reach the final margin, as Buyan matched Steffey's goal total of 12 this year when she redirected in a shot from Steffey on the near post for the game-winner.

W&J held a 10-6 lead in shots, including 9-5 on goal, while also attempted one more penalty corner, 6-5. Steffey took five shots, while fellow senior Kelly Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) added three shots.

Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) improved to 14-3 on the season by making two saves in 70 minutes.
