W&J survives upset-minded Waynesburg, 14-10

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson held Waynesburg to just 78 yards of total offense in the second half as the Presidents survived an upset-minded Yellow Jackets squad with a 14-10 win in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Backyard Brawl.

Jesse Zubik (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) broke the W&J career receiving yards record on the second play from scrimmage as he hauled in a 28-yard pass from Pete Coughlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). He passed Alex Baroffio (2010-13), who held the record with 3,204 yards. Zubik finished the game with 65 yards on five receptions, giving him 194 catches and 3,251 career yards in three seasons. He also moved into the top five in W&J single-season receptions and fifth place in PAC history with 84 grabs and 1,316 yards this year.

Waynesburg got on the board first with a 26-yard field goal with 6:28 left in the first quarter. W&J took the lead at 7-3 on a David Kincaid one-yard scoring run that capped a 10-play, 71-yard drive at 2:38 of the period.

The Yellow Jackets found the end zone in the second quarter thanks to a four-yard run by Ben Ciero to give the hosts a 10-7 lead which held up through halftime.

Coughlin eventually scored the final points of the game at the 8:24-mark of the third quarter when he rushed in from 27 yards on the third play after the Presidents' defense held Waynesburg on fourth down. The first play of the drive was Coughlin rushing for 15 yards and then he hit Jake Cullen (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) for a 27-yard pass before taking the ball in himself to cap the drive.

Tom Marra (Moon Township, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) recorded a career-high 3.0 tackles for loss (of eight total tackles), surpassing his previous benchmark of 2.5 from last season against Grove City. Nick Murgo (Warren, R.I./Mount Hope) and Zach Walker (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) led all players with 10 tackles apiece. Murgo totaled 2.0 TFL, while Walker had 1.0 and nine solo stops.

On the day, W&J recorded 10 tackles for loss, giving it 101 for the year and marking the first time the Presidents topped 100 TFL in a season in Mike Sirianni's 14 seasons as head coach.

Torre Carr (North Strabane, Pa./Canon-McMillan), O'Shea Anderson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) and Freddie McKissick (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) all joined Marra with a sack.

Coughlin finished 11-of-19 passing for 162 yards, while netting 60 yards rushing on 15 carries. Cullen recorded a game high with 77 yards on three catches.

The victory wraps up the regular season for W&J at 8-2, including 6-2 in the PAC. The Presidents will now await their fate at a possible ECAC bowl game, which would potentially be played Friday, Saturday or Sunday at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The ECAC will host a live selection show on Facebook Live on Monday, Nov. 14, at noon.
