WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) pulled down 22 rebounds, but Washington & Jefferson was unable to recover from a sluggish start in a 66-62 nonconference women's basketball loss to Marietta.
Parker's 22 boards are a career high, the most in the Presidents' Athletic Conference this season and eighth highest total in NCAA Division III thus far in 2016-17. It is the first time a President has gone over 20 rebounds in a game since all-time leading rebounder Maggie Gibson (2006-10) hauled in 22 boards against then-No. 14 Thomas More in a 61-57 Presidents' win over the Saints on Jan. 7, 2010. It was the same game Gibson recorded her 1,000th career point as well.Â
On this afternoon, Parker snagged 15 rebounds in the first half behind six in the first quarter and nine in the second. She picked up two more in the third before grabbing six in the final period. Six of her rebounds were on the offensive end, while the remaining 16 came on defense. The sophomore added nine points, four blocks and two steals in the defeat.
W&J (5-3) posted a tepid start, making only 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from the floor and 0-for-9 from three-point range in the first half to head to intermission with a 13-point deficit, 30-17. The Pioneers opened the game on a 9-0 run and the Presidents weren't able to ever fully recover.
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) tied for the game high with 16 points behind a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line.
Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) reached double figures for the third time this season by scoring 10 points.
Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) added nine points, including a pair of second-half triples.
Marietta's (7-4) bench outscored W&J's, 32-12, while the Presidents held a 14-5 edge on second-chance points behind a 16 offensive rebounds (seven for Marietta). W&J totaled 46 rebounds to Marietta's 33.
W&J will be back on the court on Thursday, Dec. 29 when it travels to Washington, D.C. for the Jamie Lynn Roberts-Fairfield Inn DC Holiday Classic hosted by Catholic. The Presidents will tip-off against the host Cardinals at 3 p.m. to open play.
