BETHANY, W.Va. – The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with an 80-68 victory over Bethany, securing an overall record of 21-4 and a conference record of 16-2.
The Presidents were quick to respond to the Bison's opening four points, tying the game thanks to a jumper by
Danni Medovich and then taking the lead less than a minute later with a jumper by
Beka Bellhy, making it 6-4.
Play continued evenly for the majority of the period, with the highest margin only reaching four in favor of W&J after a jumper by B. Bellhy at 00:59. The period tied up for a final time, 19-19, with six seconds remaining and a layup by Bethany in the last second ended the first period at a score of 21-19.
The second period saw the Bison gain some momentum and pull ahead by eight points following a pair of three-pointers. A three-pointer by
Taylor Cortazzo at 2:05 brought the Presidents within one point and a free throw by B. Bellhy in the last two seconds ended the first half with W&J trailing, 39-34.
A five-point run to open the second half put W&J back in the lead, 40-39. Bethany responded with a three-pointer, but a 10-point run pushed the Presidents ahead for the rest of the game. The third period ended with a score of 56-51 in favor of W&J.
A free throw by
Rachel Bellhy at 5:52 in the fourth period gave the Presidents a game-high 15-point margin. The Presidents finished the game with an 80-68 win.
B. Bellhy scored a career-high 34 points, shooting 57.14 percent from the field and going 10-for-10 in free throws.
R. Bellhy registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while T. Cortazzo also scored in the double digits by adding 12 points of her own, and
Amirah Moore contributed a team-high five assists.
The Presidents will return to action when they compete in the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals on February 26th.
