Presidents post split with La Roche before heading to Florida

By Anthony Socrates, Sports Information Intern

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with La Roche, winning the first game 7-2 before dropping the nightcap 8-6, in its final action before heading to Florida for six games during Spring Break.

The Presidents opened up the first game of the twin bill with Joe Vita on the mound. The first two innings went scoreless with Vita forcing the Redhawks to strand four runners on base. La Roche quickly turned the tides as Joe Professori and Corey Lazor both doubled, scoring a run each to make the score 2-0 in the top of the third.

W&J cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fourth after Derek Helbing walked to set up Nick Vento who tripled to right center plating Helbing, 2-1.

Vita made quick work of the Redhawks with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth, needing just nine pitches to retire the side in order. The Presidents' offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth, exploding for five runs. Nick Gatins started the inning off by walking and later advanced to second on an errant throw by the pitcher on a ball hit by Anthony Paladino with one out. Later in the inning, Helbing recorded a two-out single up the middle to bring in Gatins and advance Paladino to second, tying the game at 2-2. The Presidents took a 3-2 lead thanks to a single from Vento which plated Paladino and advanced Helbing to third. Josh Crummer continued the barrage of runs with a double into center field, the first hit and two RBI of his career, scoring Helbing and Vento, and improving the score to 5-2. Jake Gordon finished off the bottom of the fifth by bringing pinch-runner Adam LaRue in from second to increase the lead to 6-2.

W&J went on to score another run after Gatins singled to right field, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and reached home on a throwing error by the catcher when Paladino stole second. Vita finished the game off with a 1-2-3, 13-pitch seventh to improve his record to 1-0 on the season. The junior from Gibsonia, Pa. twirled a complete game, registering three strikeouts on 84 pitches and allowing only two earned runs. Starter Tanner Wilt (1-2) took the loss for La Roche.

The Presidents started off the second game of the doubleheader by jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Michael Ruffing scored from third on a wild pitch. La Roche went on to take the lead after a four run top of the third.

Vento cut the Redhawks' lead to two in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off home run, his first of the season and 10th of his career.

The Presidents put together a three-run fifth inning featuring runs batted in by Dan Trettel, Ruffing and LaRue, putting W&J up 5-4. La Roche regained the lead in the top of the sixth by plating four runs to make it an 8-5 game.

The Presidents would cut the lead to 8-6 in the sixth, with an RBI single down the left field line by Justin Zak. However, W&J could not make up the lost ground in the seventh inning falling to La Roche, 8-6. Nick Comport (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, while Regis Sauer (2-0) picked up the win and Trey Claar earned his third save with a hitless seventh inning.

The Presidents move to 2-2 on the season and La Roche goes to 9-5 on the year. W&J will travel to Auburndale, Fla. to participate in the Russmatt Invitational, over spring break, to play in six games against teams across the country. W&J will take on Salve Regina (R.I.) in a doubleheader to kickoff the trip on Friday, March 18. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
