Presidents sweep Bobcats in doubleheader

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson softball team swept its twinbill at Pitt-Greensburg by a score of 7-3 in the first game and 4-0 in the second.

The Presidents got back on track, moving to 3-9 on the year, as they returned from their trip to Florida.

The first game featured W&J jumping on the Bobcats early as Rachel Marx got on base after being walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Figura. In the next at bat, Abby Cunningham doubled in Marx giving the lead to the Presidents in the first inning, 1-0.

Pitt-Greensburg would answer by loading the bases in the bottom of the first but failing to plate any runs, leaving the score 1-0 in favor of W&J.

Scoring remained stagnant in the second and third until the Presidents got the bats going in the top of the fourth. Ally Doty led off the inning with a single through the left side and later advanced to second on a fielder's choice to the pitcher. Marx would reach on an error by the right fielder and bring Doty in to score improving W&J's lead to 2-0. However the Presidents were not done as Figura advanced Marx to third with a single. Cunningham reached safely on another Bobcats' error, advancing Figura to second while Marx remained at third. In the following at bat, Emily Watson singled to center, plating both Marx and Figura to increase the Presidents' score to 4-0.

Pitt-Greensburg would cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run by Morgan Russo.

W&J added two more runs in the top of the sixth after Cunningham scored from third base on a wild pitch and an RBI single to center field by Jamie Smith, scoring Watson.

The Presidents tallied one more run as Figura grounded out to second base, picking up an RBI by batting in Carie Guballa.

Krista McCartney pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, giving up only four runs on six hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Presidents continued their success as they scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Smith walked and advanced to second after Nicole Ashcraft reached on an error by the shortstop. Doty later singled to center field with one out to advance the runners one bag each. In the next at bat Meghan Staab grounded out to the short stop but plated Smith in the process to put W&J in the lead 1-0. Marx then extended the lead by doubling to right center bringing home Doty and Ashcraft and improving the score to 3-0 to close out the top half of the second inning.

The Presidents were able to create another scoring opportunity with a sacrifice bunt from Watson, that advanced Cuningham, after being walked, to second base. Shortly after, Logann Woodley would reach on an error by the first baseman which advanced Woodley to second and Cunningham to third. An additional throwing error on the same play would score Cunningham to move the count to 4-0.

W&J's proficient pitching and error-less defense would aid it in preserving the shutout through seven innings leaving the score 4-0.

The Presidents' Taylor Andres pitched a complete-game shutout only giving up four hits while recording two strikeouts.

Marx finished the day 4-8 with two runs and two RBIs; Watson finished 5-8 with one run and two RBIs; and Cunningham 3-7 with two runs and a RBI.

The Presidents will open up Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Bethany, 1 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Park in Washington, Pa.
