W&J sends seniors out with 21-9 win over Bethany

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team clinched a spot in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference tournament and sent its seniors out with a 21-9 win over Bethany at Alexandre Stadium.

The victory improves the Presidents to 6-10 this year, as they close out the regular season with a 5-2 mark in the ORLC with the two losses coming by a goal apiece. The Bison drop to 3-13 overall and 2-5 in the league.

Zach Fredericks scored a career-high eight goals, plus added four assists, to total a new benchmark of 12 points in the game. It is the first time that a President scored eight goals in a game since Zach Devilbiss posted eight against Trine on April 22, 2009. Kyle Heinig added four goals and three assists for seven points and Devon Curran also scored four goals with one assist. Ryan Quan and Bryan Whipkey both notched two goals and two assists in finishing at four points.

W&J scored early and often en route to the runaway victory. Fredericks scored W&J's first three goals to put the hosts up, 3-1, 6:22 into the match. Heinig got on the board at the 7:41-mark and 5:11-mark to put W&J ahead 5-2. Fredericks' fourth goal was followed by Quan and Whipkey's first of the game as the Presidents led 8-2 through 15 minutes.

Heinig scored twice in the second, and Fredericks and Whipkey each posted one as W&J worked the lead to 12-3 by halftime.

The Bison scored the first and last goals of the third period, but W&J scored four times in between, twice by Curran and once each from Quan and Fredericks to make it a 16-5 match after three quarters.

Fredericks and Curran both scored twice in the fourth quarter, while Michael Nejak also joined in on the action for the first time in his career as W&J wrapped up the ORLC berth with the 21-9 victory.

W&J held a commanding edge on shots, 62-25, with the on-goal numbers showing 39-15. Curran accounted for 17 shots himself, the largest single-game total for the Presidents dating back to 2007 where game-by-game statistics are available. Fredericks posted 14, Whipkey 10 and Heinig eight to become the W&J single-season shots leader at 129.

Quan finished with double-digit ground balls for the third time in the last four games, picking up 12 and going 16-for-30 on faceoffs. Fredericks collected seven GBs, while Rocco Ruscitto and Joseph Tritschler each snagged five.

Jacob Succop earned the win, making five saves and surrendering four goals in 46:11. Elijah Long started and finished the game, totaling 13:49 of action and allowing four goals to one save.

The ORLC tournament is slated to take begin on Wednesday, May 4, with the top two seeds hosting semifinal games and the highest remaining seed holding the championship game on Saturday, May 7. Seeding will be determined this week as there are still league games to be played.
