LATROBE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson completed the season sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Saint Vincent with an 8-3 win over the Bearcats at Bearcat Ballfield.
The victory gives the Presidents an 11-7 record in the PAC, good for fourth place, while increasing W&J to 17-14 overall this season. The Bearcats drop to 9-11 within the league and 16-17 on the year.
W&J plated the first two runs of the game via sacrifice flies off the bat of
Derek Helbing (third inning) and
Nick Vento (fifth inning).
Vento's sac fly opened the scoring in the Presidents' five-run fifth inning and came with the bases loaded. The following batter,
Frank Fortunato, ripped a two-run double to deep right-center, and came in to score on
Ryan Sciullo's single to left field. The final run of the inning occurred when
Dan Trettel was caught stealing, but was in a rundown long enough to allow Sciullo to cross home plate, 6-0.
The home team was able to get two runs back in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-2 game, but the Presidents answered with a run in the top of the sixth after
Nick Morton hit a one-out single to center and advanced to third thanks to a pair of wild pitches. The senior scored on a squeeze bunt by
Adam LaRue, 7-2.
Sciullo led off the ninth inning with a double to left and later scored on a single by
Nick Gatins to end the day's scoring and make it 8-3.
Riley Groves improved to 5-2 on the season, working the first 6.0 innings and surrendering six hits and a pair of earned runs with three strikeouts and a walk. He was able to get nine outs on the ground and five through the air.
Joe Vita secured his second save of the year by working the final 3.0 innings and giving up four hits, including a solo home run.
Sciullo finished with a career-best four hits in going 4-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. In the process, he reached 30 hits for the season, besting the 27 from his rookie campaign.
Fortunato moved into second place on the team with 20 RBI after plating a pair against Saint Vincent thanks to two hits. Trettel and Morton both provided a pair of base knocks, as eight of nine starting hitters recorded at least one of W&J's 14 hits.
W&J will step out of PAC play for its next two games, first traveling to Frostburg, Md., for a 4 p.m. meeting with No. 12 Frostburg State on Tuesday, April 26.
