BETHANY, W.Va. -- Washington & Jefferson needed just 12 hits to secure a doubleheader sweep at Bethany, besting the Bison 2-0 in the opener and 4-2 in the night cap.
W&J runs its winning streak to six as the Presidents improve to 20-14 overall and 13-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. It marks the 12th 20-win season for the program in the last 13 years.
Both of W&J's runs in the first game came via solo home run.
Mark Merlino homered in the top of the second, his first round-tripper in college, while
Nick Vento blasted his team-leading fourth of the season and 13th of his career in the fourth inning.
It was more than enough production for starting pitcher
Trevor Kerr, who picked up his first career shutout after scattering four hits. Kerr improved to 5-1 on the season thanks to 11 ground outs and four strike outs, while facing just three hitters over the minimum.
Michael Ruffing provided two base knocks and
Ryan Sciullo added W&J's other hit, a double.
W&J needed until the fourth inning of the second game to strike, plating a pair in the frame. Vento led off with a double and later scored on a triple by Sciullo, during which the latter would come in to score on a throwing error by the second baseman, 2-0.
The Presidents tacked on two more in the fifth inning when a
Derek Helbing double put runners on second and third and Vento delivered an RBI single to score
Adam LaRue. Helbing crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from
Frank Fortunato.
Riley Groves got the win in game two, his fifth-straight decision with a victory, to improve to 6-2 on the year. He worked 6.1 innings and surrendered a pair of runs in the seventh, while striking out four and yielding just four hits. Helbing came on to close out the game, earning his fifth save, third-most in a season by a President, giving up one hit in 0.2 inning.
The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the series on Sunday, May 1. First pitch was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but has tentatively been moved up to 11:45 a.m. For the latest schedule changes, check gopresidents.com and @wjathletics on Twitter.
